Meta tags provide information to all sorts of clients, such as browsers and search<br \/>\n  engines. Just keep in mind that each client will likely only interpret the <code>meta<\/code> tags that it uses,<br \/>\n  and ignore the rest (although they might be useful for other reasons).\n<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how Google would interpret <code>meta<\/code> tags of this sample HTML page:<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"meta-name=description-content=a-description-of-the-page\" data-text='&lt;meta name=\"description\" content=\"A description of the page\"&gt;' tabindex=\"-1\"><code>&lt;meta name=\"description\" content=\"A description of the page\"&gt;<\/code><\/h2>\n<p>\n  This tag provides a short description of the page. In some situations this description is used as<br \/>\n  a part of the snippet shown in the search results. For more information, learn how to<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/google-bilgi-bankasi\/improve-snippets-with-a-meta-description-makeover\/\">Improve snippets with a meta description makeover<\/a><br \/>\n  and create <a href=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/google-bilgi-bankasi\/title-links\/\">good titles<\/a> and<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/google-bilgi-bankasi\/snippets\/\">snippets<\/a> in Search Results. While the use of a<br \/>\n  description <code>meta<\/code> tag is optional and will have no effect on your rankings, a good description can<br \/>\n  result in a better snippet, which in turn can help to improve the quality and quantity of visitors<br \/>\n  from our search results.\n<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"titlethe-title-of-the-pagetitle\" tabindex=\"-1\"><code>&lt;title&gt;The title of the page&lt;\/title&gt;<\/code><\/h2>\n<p>\n  While technically not a <code>meta<\/code> tag, this tag is often used together with the &#8220;description.&#8221; The<br \/>\n  contents of this tag are generally shown as the title in search results (and of course in the<br \/>\n  user&#8217;s browser when visiting the page or viewing bookmarks). Some additional information can be<br \/>\n  found in our blog post<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/google-bilgi-bankasi\/target-visitors-or-search-engines\/\">Target visitors or search engines?<\/a>,<br \/>\n  especially under &#8220;Make good use of page titles.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"meta-name=robots-content=...,-...-and-meta-name=googlebot-content=...,-...\" data-text='&lt;meta name=\"robots\" content=\"..., ...\"&gt; and &lt;meta name=\"googlebot\" content=\"..., ...\"&gt;' tabindex=\"-1\"><code>&lt;meta name=\"robots\" content=\"..., ...\"&gt;<\/code> and <code>&lt;meta name=\"googlebot\" content=\"..., ...\"&gt;<\/code><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/google-bilgi-bankasi\/robots-meta-tag\/#nofollow\"><code>nofollow<\/code><\/a>:<br \/>\n    Don&#8217;t follow links from this page when looking for new pages to crawl (also see<br \/>\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/google-bilgi-bankasi\/block-search-indexing-with-noindex\/\">Block or remove pages using <code>meta<\/code> tags<\/a>).\n  <\/li>\n<li>\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/google-bilgi-bankasi\/robots-meta-tag\/#nosnippet\"><code>nosnippet<\/code><\/a>:<br \/>\n    Don&#8217;t show a snippet of this page when displaying it in the search results.\n  <\/li>\n<li>\n    <code>noodp<\/code>: Don&#8217;t use text from ODP (The Open Directory Project a.k.a. dmoz.org) to<br \/>\n    generate a title or snippet for this page (see how to create<br \/>\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/google-bilgi-bankasi\/title-links\/\">good titles<\/a> and<br \/>\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/google-bilgi-bankasi\/snippets\/\">snippets<\/a>).\n  <\/li>\n<li>\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/google-bilgi-bankasi\/robots-meta-tag\/#noarchive\"><code>noarchive<\/code><\/a>:<br \/>\n    Don&#8217;t display a &#8220;Cached&#8221; link for this page in the search results.\n  <\/li>\n<li>\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/google-bilgi-bankasi\/robots-meta-tag\/#unavailable-after\"><code>unavailable_after:[date]<\/code><\/a>:<br \/>\n    remove this page from the search results after the specified date and time.\n  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n  The default rule is <code>index, follow<\/code>&mdash;this is used if you omit this tag entirely or<br \/>\n  if you specify <code>content=\"all\"<\/code>. Additional information about the <span>robots<\/span> <code>meta<\/code> tag can be found in<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/google-bilgi-bankasi\/using-the-robots-meta-tag\/\">Using the <span>robots<\/span> <code>meta<\/code> tag<\/a>. As a side<br \/>\n  note, you can now also specify this information in the header of your pages using the<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/googleblog.blogspot.com\/2007\/07\/robots-exclusion-protocol-now-with-even.html\" class=\"external-link\"><code>X-Robots-Tag<\/code> HTTP header rule<\/a>.<br \/>\n  This is particularly useful if you wish to fine-tune crawling and indexing of non-HTML files like<br \/>\n  PDFs, images or other kinds of documents.\n<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"meta-name=google-content=notranslate\" data-text='&lt;meta name=\"google\" content=\"notranslate\"&gt;' tabindex=\"-1\"><code>&lt;meta name=\"google\" content=\"notranslate\"&gt;<\/code><\/h2>\n<p>\n  When we recognize that the contents of a page are not in the language that the user is likely<br \/>\n  to want to read, we often provide a link in the search results to an automatic translation of<br \/>\n  your page. In general, this gives you the chance to provide your unique and compelling content to<br \/>\n  a much larger group of users. However, there may be situations where this is not desired. By using<br \/>\n  this <code>meta<\/code> tag, you can signal that you do not wish for Google to provide a link to a translation<br \/>\n  for this page. This <code>meta<\/code> tag generally does not influence the ranking of the page for any<br \/>\n  particular language. Learn more about the<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/google-bilgi-bankasi\/robots-meta-tag\/#notranslate\"><code>notranslate<\/code> <code>meta<\/code> tag<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"meta-name=verify-v1-content=...\" data-text='&lt;meta name=\"verify-v1\" content=\"...\"&gt;' tabindex=\"-1\"><code>&lt;meta name=\"verify-v1\" content=\"...\"&gt;<\/code><\/h2>\n<p>\n  This <a href=\"https:\/\/search.google.com\/search-console\" class=\"external-link\">Google Webmaster Tools<\/a><br \/>\n  -specific <code>meta<\/code> tag is used on the top-level page of your site to verify ownership of a site in<br \/>\n  webmaster tools (alternatively you may upload an HTML file to do this). The content value you put<br \/>\n  into this tag is provided to you in your Webmaster Tools account. Please note that while the<br \/>\n  contents of this <code>meta<\/code> tag (including upper and lower case) must match exactly what is provided to<br \/>\n  you, it does not matter if you change the tag from XHTML to HTML or if the format of the tag<br \/>\n  matches the format of your page. For details, see<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/9008080#zippy=%2Chtml-tag\" class=\"external-link\">Verify your site ownership<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"meta-http-equiv=content-type-content=...;-charset=...\" data-text='&lt;meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"...; charset=...\"&gt;' tabindex=\"-1\"><code>&lt;meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"...; charset=...\"&gt;<\/code><\/h2>\n<p>\n  This <code>meta<\/code> tag defines the content-type and character set of the page. When using this <code>meta<\/code> tag,<br \/>\n  make sure that you surround the value of the <code>content<\/code> attribute with quotes; otherwise<br \/>\n  the <code>charset<\/code> attribute may be interpreted incorrectly. If you decide to use this meta<br \/>\n  tag, it goes without saying that you should make sure that your content is actually in the<br \/>\n  specified character set.<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/code.google.com\/webstats\/2005-12\/metadata.html\" class=\"external-link\">Google Webauthoring Statistics<\/a><br \/>\n  has interesting numbers on the use of this <code>meta<\/code> tag.\n<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"meta-http-equiv=refresh-content=...;url=...\" data-text='&lt;meta http-equiv=\"refresh\" content=\"...;url=...\"&gt;' tabindex=\"-1\"><code>&lt;meta http-equiv=\"refresh\" content=\"...;url=...\"&gt;<\/code><\/h2>\n<p>\n  This <code>meta<\/code> tag sends the user to a new URL after a certain amount of time, sometimes used as a<br \/>\n  simple form of redirection. This kind of redirect is not supported by all browsers and can be<br \/>\n  confusing to the user. If you need to change the URL of a page as it is shown in search engine<br \/>\n  results, we recommended that you use a server-side <code>301<\/code> redirect instead.<br \/>\n  Additionally, W3C&#8217;s<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/WCAG20-TECHS\/#F41\" class=\"external-link\">Techniques and Failures for Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0<\/a><br \/>\n  lists it as being deprecated.\n<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"xhtml-and-capitalization\" tabindex=\"-1\">(X)HTML and Capitalization<\/h2>\n<p>\n  Google can read both HTML and XHTML-style <code>meta<\/code> tags (regardless of the code used on the page).<br \/>\n  In addition, upper or lower case is generally not important in <code>meta<\/code> tags&mdash;we treat<br \/>\n  <code>&lt;TITLE&gt;<\/code> and <code>&lt;title&gt;<\/code> equally. The <code>verify-v1<\/code><br \/>\n  <code>meta<\/code> tag is an exception, it&#8217;s case-sensitive.\n<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"revisit-after-sitemap-lastmod-and-changefreq\" tabindex=\"-1\"><strike>revisit-after<\/strike> Sitemap lastmod and changefreq<\/h2>\n<p>\n  Occasionally webmasters needlessly include <code>revisit-after<\/code> to encourage a search<br \/>\n  engine&#8217;s crawl schedule, however this <code>meta<\/code> tag is largely ignored. If you want to give search<br \/>\n  engines information about changes in your pages, use and submit an<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/google-bilgi-bankasi\/build-submit-sitemap\/#xml\">XML sitemap<\/a>.
