We&#8217;d like to help foster a lasting relationship between you and a<br \/>\n  responsive experience for your users. Last week I filmed my updated presentation from<br \/>\n  &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/searchmarketingexpo.com\/west\/2010\/full_agenda2#350\" class=\"external-link\">The Need For Speed: Google Says It Matters<\/a>&#8221;<br \/>\n  which includes three first steps to understanding site performance. So grab headphones and some<br \/>\n  popcorn, then<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/support\/webmasters\/bin\/topic.py?topic=8469\" class=\"external-link\">verify ownership of your website<\/a><br \/>\n  and download a<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/code.google.com\/speed\/page-speed\/\" class=\"external-link\">plugin<\/a>,<br \/>\n  and we&#8217;ll all be comfy with site performance in no time.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-wrapper-left\">\n<\/div>\n<p>Just curious about the Q&A;? Here you go:<\/p>\n<p><i>Is it possible to check my server response time from different areas around the world?<\/i><br \/>\n  <br \/>\n  Yes. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webpagetest.org\/test\" class=\"external-link\">WebPagetest.org<\/a><br \/>\n  can test performance from the United States (both East and West Coast\u2014go West Coast! :),<br \/>\n  United Kingdom, China, and New Zealand.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <i>What&#8217;s a good response time to aim for?<\/i><br \/>\n  First, if your competition is fast, they may provide a better user experience than your site for<br \/>\n  your same audience. In that case, you may want to make your site<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=six+million+dollar+man\" class=\"external-link\">better, stronger, faster&#8230;<\/a>.<br \/>\n  Otherwise, studies by<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.akamai.com\/html\/about\/press\/releases\/2009\/press_091409\" class=\"external-link\">Akamai<\/a><br \/>\n  claim 2 seconds as the threshold for ecommerce site &#8220;acceptability.&#8221; Just as an FYI, at Google we<br \/>\n  aim for under a half-second.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <i>Does progressive rendering help users?<\/i><br \/>\n  Definitely! Progressive rendering is when a browser can display content as it&#8217;s available<br \/>\n  incrementally rather than waiting for all the content to display at once. This provides users<br \/>\n  faster visual feedback and helps them feel more in control.<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/\" class=\"external-link\">Bing<\/a><br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.en.oreilly.com\/1\/event\/29\/The%20User%20and%20Business%20Impact%20of%20Server%20Delays,%20Additional%20Bytes,%20and%20HTTP%20Chunking%20in%20Web%20Search%20Presentation.pptx\" class=\"external-link\">experimented with progressive rendering<\/a><br \/>\n  by sending users their visual header (like the logo and searchbox) quickly, then the results\/ads<br \/>\n  once they were available. Bing found a 0.7% increase in satisfaction with progressive rendering.<br \/>\n  They commented that this improvement compared with full feature rollout. How can you implement<br \/>\n  progressive rendering techniques on your site? Put<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/code.google.com\/speed\/page-speed\/docs\/rtt.html#PutStylesBeforeScripts\" class=\"external-link\">stylesheets at the top of the page<\/a>.<br \/>\n  This allows a browser to start displaying content ASAP.
