This is such a common annoyance that<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/xkcd.com\/869\/\" class=\"external-link\">we&#8217;ve even seen comics about it<\/a>. Usually this<br \/>\n  happens because the website is<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/4046647\" class=\"external-link\">not properly set up to handle requests from smartphones<\/a><br \/>\n  and sends you to its smartphone home page&mdash;we call this a &#8220;faulty redirect&#8221;.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  We&#8217;d like to spare users the frustration of landing on irrelevant pages and help webmasters fix<br \/>\n  the faulty redirects. Starting today in our English search results in the US, whenever we detect<br \/>\n  that smartphone users are redirected to a home page instead of the page they asked for, we may note<br \/>\n  it below the result. If you still wish to proceed to the page, you can click &#8220;Try anyway&#8221;:\n<\/p>\n<aside class=\"note\">\n  Update: the search label depicted in the following screenshot has been deprecated.<br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt src=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/kb-gorsel\/g-bcd43bab534e.png\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/p>\n<p>\n  And we&#8217;re providing advice and resources to help you direct your audience to the pages they want.<br \/>\n  Here&#8217;s a quick rundown:\n<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\n    Do a few searches on your own phone (or with<br \/>\n    <a href=\"https:\/\/developer.chrome.com\/devtools\/docs\/mobile-emulation\" class=\"external-link\">a browser set up to act like a smartphone<\/a>)<br \/>\n    and see how your site behaves. Simple but effective. <span>\ud83d\ude42<\/span>\n  <\/li>\n<li>\n<p>\n      Check out<br \/>\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/search.google.com\/search-console\" class=\"external-link\">Webmaster Tools<\/a><br \/>\n      &mdash;we&#8217;ll send you a message if we detect that any of your site&#8217;s pages are redirecting<br \/>\n      smartphone users to the home page. We&#8217;ll also show you any faulty redirects we detect in the<br \/>\n      Smartphone Crawl Errors section of Webmaster Tools:\n    <\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" alt src=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/kb-gorsel\/g-48a7f2eba2d7.png\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"533\">\n  <\/li>\n<li>\n<p>Investigate any faulty redirects and fix them. Here&#8217;s what you can do:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n        Use the example URLs we provide in Webmaster Tools as a starting point to debug exactly<br \/>\n        where the problem is with your server configuration.\n      <\/li>\n<li>\n        Set up your server so that it redirects smartphone users to the equivalent URL on your<br \/>\n        smartphone site.\n      <\/li>\n<li>\n        If a page on your site doesn&#8217;t have a smartphone equivalent, keep users on the desktop page,<br \/>\n        rather than redirecting them to the smartphone site&#8217;s home page.
