Check out our <a href=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/google-bilgi-bankasi\/avoid-intrusive-interstitials-and-dialogs\/\">documentation<\/a> on this<br \/>\n  topic instead.<\/aside>\n<aside class=\"note\">\n  <b>January 10, 2017 update<\/b>: Starting today, pages where content is not easily accessible to a<br \/>\n  user on the transition from the mobile search results may not rank as high. As we said, this new<br \/>\n  signal is just one of hundreds of signals that are used in ranking and the intent of the search<br \/>\n  query is still a very strong signal, so a page may still rank highly if it has great, relevant<br \/>\n  content. Please head to the <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/community\" class=\"external-link\">webmaster<br \/>\n  forums<\/a> if you have any questions.<br \/>\n<\/aside>\n<p>\n  In Google Search, our goal is to help users quickly find the best answers to their questions,<br \/>\n  regardless of the device they&#8217;re using. Today, we&#8217;re announcing two upcoming changes to mobile<br \/>\n  search results that make finding content easier for users.\n<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"simplifying-mobile-search-results\" tabindex=\"-1\">\n  Simplifying mobile search results<br \/>\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n  Two years ago, we added a<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/google-bilgi-bankasi\/helping-users-find-mobile-friendly-pages\/\">mobile-friendly label<\/a><br \/>\n  to help users find pages where the text and content was readable without zooming and the tap<br \/>\n  targets were appropriately spaced. Since then, we&#8217;ve seen the ecosystem evolve and we recently<br \/>\n  found that 85% of all pages in the mobile search results now meet this criteria and show the<br \/>\n  mobile-friendly label. To keep search results uncluttered, we&#8217;ll be removing the label, although<br \/>\n  the mobile-friendly criteria will continue to be a ranking signal. We&#8217;ll continue providing the<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/search.google.com\/search-console\/mobile-usability\" class=\"external-link\">Mobile Usability report<\/a><br \/>\n  in Search Console and the<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/search.google.com\/test\/mobile-friendly\">Mobile-Friendly Test<\/a> to help<br \/>\n  webmasters evaluate the effect of the mobile-friendly signal on their pages.\n<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"helping-users-find-the-content-theyre-looking-for\" tabindex=\"-1\">\n  Helping users find the content they&#8217;re looking for<br \/>\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n  Although the majority of pages now have text and content on the page that is readable without<br \/>\n  zooming, we&#8217;ve recently seen many examples where these pages show intrusive interstitials to users.<br \/>\n  While the underlying content is present on the page and available to be indexed by Google, content<br \/>\n  may be visually obscured by an interstitial. This can frustrate users because they are unable to<br \/>\n  easily access the content that they were expecting when they tapped on the search result.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Pages that show intrusive interstitials provide a poorer experience to users than other pages where<br \/>\n  content is immediately accessible. This can be problematic on mobile devices where screens are<br \/>\n  often smaller. To improve the mobile search experience, after January 10, 2017, pages where content<br \/>\n  is not easily accessible to a user on the transition from the mobile search results may not rank as highly.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Here are some examples of techniques that make content less accessible to a user:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n    Showing a popup that covers the main content, either immediately after the user navigates to a<br \/>\n    page from the search results, or while they are looking through the page.\n  <\/li>\n<li>\n     Displaying a standalone interstitial that the user has to dismiss before accessing the main content.\n  <\/li>\n<li>\n    Using a layout where the above-the-fold portion of the page appears similar to a standalone<br \/>\n    interstitial, but the original content has been inlined underneath the fold.\n  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"examples-of-interstitials-that-make-content-less-accessible\" tabindex=\"-1\">\n  Examples of interstitials that make content less accessible<br \/>\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n  Here&#8217;s an example of an intrusive popup:\n<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/kb-gorsel\/g-a0cd47fc84a7.png\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"An example of an intrusive popup\"><\/p>\n<p>\n  Here&#8217;s an example of an intrusive standalone interstitial:\n<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/kb-gorsel\/g-1377e593cb92.png\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"An example of an intrusive standalone interstitial\"><\/p>\n<p>\n  Here&#8217;s another example of an intrusive standalone interstitial:\n<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/kb-gorsel\/g-738852f14c8f.png\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Another example of an intrusive standalone interstitial\"><\/p>\n<p>\n  By contrast, here are some examples of techniques that, used responsibly, would not be affected by<br \/>\n  the new signal:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n    Interstitials that appear to be in response to a legal obligation, such as for cookie usage or<br \/>\n    for age verification.\n  <\/li>\n<li>\n    Login dialogs on sites where content is not publicly indexable. For example, this would include<br \/>\n    private content such as email or unindexable content that is behind a paywall.\n  <\/li>\n<li>\n    Banners that use a reasonable amount of screen space and are easily dismissible. For example,<br \/>\n    the app install banners provided by Safari and Chrome are examples of banners that use a<br \/>\n    reasonable amount of screen space.\n  <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"examples-of-interstitials-that-would-not-be-affected-by-the-new-signal,-if-used-responsibly\" tabindex=\"-1\">\n  Examples of interstitials that would not be affected by the new signal, if used responsibly<br \/>\n<\/h2>\n<p>\n  Here&#8217;s an example of an interstitial for cookie usage:\n<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/kb-gorsel\/g-c0614aacd724.png\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"An example of an interstitial for cookie usage\"><\/p>\n<p>\n  Here&#8217;s an example of an interstitial for age verification:\n<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/kb-gorsel\/g-b34c4bb568ed.png\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"An example of an interstitial for age verification\"><\/p>\n<p>\n  Here&#8217;s an example of a banner that uses a reasonable amount of screen space:\n<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/kb-gorsel\/g-8dd2407a6938.png\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"An example of a banner that uses a reasonable amount of screen space\"><\/p>\n<p>\n  We previously explored a signal that checked for interstitials that ask a user to install a mobile<br \/>\n  app. As we continued our development efforts, we saw the need to broaden our focus to interstitials<br \/>\n  more generally. Accordingly, to avoid duplication in our signals, we&#8217;ve removed the check for<br \/>\n  app-install interstitials from the mobile-friendly test and have incorporated it into this new<br \/>\n  signal in Search.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Remember, this new signal is just one of hundreds of signals that are used in ranking. The intent<br \/>\n  of the search query is still a very strong signal, so a page may still rank highly if it has great,<br \/>\n  relevant content.
