Markup on the page is the supported method.<\/p>\n<h2>When alternate links apply<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Pages differing only in interface language \u2014 a blog whose posts are untranslated but whose navigation, header and footer change.<\/li>\n<li>Pages in the same language with minor differences \u2014 separate versions for the USA, Ireland and Australia.<\/li>\n<li>Full, accurate translations of the same page.<\/li>\n<li>Pages where language is chosen by the <code>Accept-Language<\/code> header, by IP, or manually \u2014 this case needs <code>hreflang=\"x-default\"<\/code>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The markup<\/h2>\n<pre><code>&lt;link rel=\"alternate\" hreflang=\"ru\" href=\"http:\/\/ru.example.com\/\" \/&gt;\n&lt;link rel=\"alternate\" hreflang=\"en-us\" href=\"http:\/\/en.example.com\/\" \/&gt;\n&lt;link rel=\"alternate\" hreflang=\"tr-tr\" href=\"http:\/\/example.com.tr\/\" \/&gt;<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>Language codes from ISO 639-1, region codes from ISO 3166-1 alpha-2. <strong>Every version must carry links to all the others, including itself<\/strong> \u2014 a partial set is the most common implementation error.<\/p>\n<h2>Two facts that widen what is possible<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Structure does not matter.<\/strong> Versions may sit on different subdomains, different domains entirely, or simply in different directories \u2014 <code>\/o-kompanii\/<\/code>, <code>\/company\/about\/<\/code>, <code>\/firma-hakkinda<\/code> \u2014 and the attribute works the same way.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Automatic language detection is supported<\/strong> through <code>x-default<\/code>, which is the honest declaration for a site that redirects by IP. It does not fix the underlying problem \u2014 the robot still sees only one version \u2014 but it tells Yandex what the entry point is.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Supported languages<\/h2>\n<p>Forty-four, including Turkish, English, Russian, German, Spanish, French, Kazakh, Tatar, Azerbaijani and Arabic. A long list of encodings is supported too, though UTF-8 is the sane choice for anything new.<\/p>\n<h2>Where this connects<\/h2>\n<p>Yandex&#8217;s guidance on redirects warns that IP-based language redirection means the robot only ever sees one version.
