Yandex treats it as harmful in two directions: users are misled, and the owner of the genuine resource loses traffic and reputation.

The signals Yandex looks for

Similar colours, graphics, logo and icon — close enough to be mistaken, different enough to deny.

A claim to be official when no such official resource exists.

No explanation, or a vague one, of how the site relates to the original: ownership, partnership, licence.

Content similar to the original’s.

Text optimised for navigational queries about the original brand — earning money from someone else’s brand traffic.

A domain name similar to the original’s.

The case that catches legitimate businesses

The most instructive scenario in Yandex’s documentation is not a fake bank. It is a ticket reseller. The site does not imitate a theatre’s design at all, but its description says “official theatre tickets”, “exclusive seats in the concert hall”, “tickets from the organiser”. Nothing there is technically a lie, and the user cannot tell they are not on the venue’s own site. That is enough. The recommended rewrite is blunt about what the business actually is — “concierge service for ticket sales” — so the user can decide before clicking.

Which components are assessed

Domain name, site icon, the
description
tag, logo or avatar, the
title
tag, and the page content itself. This is worth noting because two of them are invisible on the page: a site can look entirely distinct and still be flagged on its meta tags alone.

How to make the relationship explicit

State the relationship in the
description
within the first 100 characters, and in the
title
within the first 20 characters. Yandex gives these limits because that is what a user reads in a search result.

State it again in the site header — “unofficial site”, “partner site”, “fan site”, “distributor”, “concierge service” — in text large and contrasting enough to actually be read.

Publish the documents that prove your right to use the brand’s identity, where a partnership exists. This step can be skipped only if the brand permits unrestricted use of its identity without acknowledgement.

If the site poses as an official resource that does not exist, say plainly that it is unofficial, and link to the real commercial or informational sources.

The underlying question

Everything above reduces to one test: can a user arriving from search tell, within a second, whose site this is? Resellers, affiliates, fan sites and comparison services are all legitimate. Being indistinguishable from the thing you are reselling is not.

Mimicry is a site copying the appearance or function of a well-known or official resource — a company, a government agency, a brand, a public figure — or claiming to be an official resource that does not exist.
