A <code>301<\/code> is recommended alongside, for the sake of users following old links.<\/p>\n<p><em>If the page exists but should not appear:<\/em> the <code>robots<\/code> meta tag with <code>noindex<\/code>, or one of those status codes. <strong>Do not block such a page in <code>robots.txt<\/code><\/strong> \u2014 the robot cannot then read the <code>noindex<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p>Each method removes the page from the database <strong>within a week<\/strong> of the robot noticing. One caveat applies to <code>robots.txt<\/code> alone: a blocked page <em>may still appear in results occasionally<\/em>, for instance when other sites link to it. For genuine confidentiality, blocking is not sufficient.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 2 \u2014 accelerate<\/h2>\n<p>Tools \u2192 Remove pages from search results, either by URL (<strong>up to 500 per site per day<\/strong>) or by prefix (<strong>up to 20 prefixes per day<\/strong>) for a directory, the whole site, or URLs with parameters. The tool works without verification for single URLs; prefix removal requires a verified site.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The condition:<\/strong> the robot removes pages submitted here <em>only if <code>Disallow<\/code> is set for them in <code>robots.txt<\/code><\/em>. This is why the order matters.<\/p>\n<h2>The statuses<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>In the delete queue<\/strong> \u2014 the robot is checking the response and the prohibition.<\/li>\n<li><strong>In progress<\/strong> \u2014 checked; removal within 24 hours.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Deleted.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Rejected<\/strong> \u2014 the page is still allowed for indexing, or the server answers something other than 404, 403 or 410.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Putting a page back<\/h2>\n<p>Remove the prohibition. The page returns when the robot next crawls and notices \u2014 <strong>which may take up to three weeks<\/strong>.
