It describes entities and their properties through attributes written directly into the HTML \u2014 no separate export file, no feed to maintain.<\/p>\n<h2>How markup is written<\/h2>\n<p>Two steps. Wrap the entity in a container declaring its type, then label each value with a property attribute:<\/p>\n<pre><code>&lt;span itemprop=\"streetAddress\"&gt;Lev Tolstoy, 16&lt;\/span&gt;<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>An unmarked block of contact details is text to a machine. The same block with <code>name<\/code>, <code>streetAddress<\/code>, <code>postalCode<\/code>, <code>addressLocality<\/code>, <code>telephone<\/code>, <code>faxNumber<\/code> and <code>email<\/code> labelled is a record that can be extracted and displayed. The vocabulary runs to several hundred types and is extended continuously.<\/p>\n<h2>What Yandex actually does with it<\/h2>\n<p>Markup feeds specific snippet types, and only these are supported:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Products and prices<\/strong> \u2014 special snippets for product pages.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Software<\/strong> \u2014 applications, programs, games.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Recipes.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Film descriptions.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Questions and answers<\/strong> \u2014 for mobile search, where Yandex can highlight the best answer.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Student research and similar works.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Organisation information and address<\/strong> \u2014 used by Yandex Business as well as Search.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Images<\/strong> \u2014 improves their appearance in Yandex Images.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Videos.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Marking up a type outside this list does no harm and produces nothing in Yandex.<\/p>\n<h2>Checking it<\/h2>\n<p>The structured data validator in the console is the authority on whether the markup parses. For common content management systems there are usually plugins; the platform documentation is the place to look before commissioning custom work.<\/p>\n<h2>The clause worth reading twice<\/h2>\n<p>Yandex states that information marked up according to Schema.org <strong>becomes publicly available and can be extracted or used by any service<\/strong>. That is the intended purpose, but it is also a decision: pricing, stock levels and contact details in machine-readable form are trivially harvested by competitors and aggregators.
