That distinction is the reason this reference matters: a file that validates against Google&#8217;s parser can still be rejected here.<\/p>\n<h2>Errors, with the Yandex-specific ones marked<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Rule does not start with \/ or *<\/strong> <em>(Yandex extension)<\/em> \u2014 a rule may begin only with those characters.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Multiple <code>User-agent: *<\/code> rules<\/strong> \u2014 only one such block is allowed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>File size limit exceeded<\/strong> <em>(Yandex)<\/em> \u2014 the file exceeds <strong>2,048 rules<\/strong>. Generated robots.txt files on large catalogues hit this.<\/li>\n<li><strong>No User-agent directive before a rule<\/strong> \u2014 rules must follow a <code>User-agent<\/code> line. Yandex adds the likely cause: an empty line after <code>User-agent<\/code>, which terminates the block. The file looks correct and the rules below it apply to nobody.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rule too long<\/strong> <em>(Yandex)<\/em> \u2014 over <strong>1,024 characters<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Invalid Sitemap URL<\/strong> <em>(Yandex)<\/em> \u2014 the sitemap must be given in full, with protocol. A relative path is a common and silent mistake.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Invalid Clean-param format<\/strong> <em>(Yandex)<\/em> \u2014 one or more parameters separated by <code>&amp;<\/code>, then a space, then the path prefix.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Warnings<\/h2>\n<p>Illegal character (anything special other than <code>*<\/code> and <code>$<\/code>); unknown directive (not in Yandex&#8217;s rules \u2014 often a valid directive for another engine, which is why this is a warning rather than an error); syntax error on a line that cannot be interpreted; and unknown error, which is a support case.<\/p>\n<h2>URL validation errors<\/h2>\n<p>When testing a specific URL against the file: a syntax error in the URL, or <strong>&#8220;this URL does not belong to your domain&#8221;<\/strong> \u2014 which usually means you pasted an alternate address of the site rather than the primary one. Given how Yandex handles mirrors, that mistake is easy to make and confusing to read.<\/p>\n<h2>How to use the analyser properly<\/h2>\n<p>Do not stop at &#8220;no errors&#8221;. Enter the URLs you believe should be crawled and the ones you believe should be blocked, and confirm the verdict for each.
