They are not interchangeable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. rel=&#8221;canonical&#8221; link element<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the <code>&lt;head&gt;<\/code>. The standard method for HTML pages. Use absolute URLs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. HTTP header<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <code>Link:<\/code> header with <code>rel=\"canonical\"<\/code>. The only option for non-HTML files such as PDFs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Redirects<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The strongest signal. When a duplicate should not be reachable at all, a 301 removes the ambiguity entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Sitemaps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A weak signal on its own, but including only canonical URLs reinforces the others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Common mistakes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Every page canonicalising to the homepage, this de-indexes the site.<\/li><li>Canonical pointing at a <code>noindex<\/code> page.<\/li><li>Canonical pointing at a URL that redirects somewhere else.<\/li><li>Relative URLs that resolve differently than intended.<\/li><li>Multiple conflicting canonical tags on one page, Google ignores all of them.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"ar-kb-tavsiye\"><p><strong>Alien Road recommends:<\/strong> crawl the site and check that every canonical target returns 200 and is self-referencing. A canonical chain, A points to B, B points to C, is treated as unreliable.
