Some of the information may be outdated (for example, some images may be missing, and some links may not work anymore).<\/aside>\n<p class=\"gargardate\">Friday, August 15, 2008<\/p>\n<p>\n  Now that we&#8217;ve<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/google-bilgi-bankasi\/farewell-to-soft-404s\/\">bid farewell to <code>soft 404<\/code> errors<\/a>,<br \/>\n  in this post for <a href=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/google-bilgi-bankasi\/its-404-week-at-webmaster-central\/\"><code>404<\/code> week<\/a><br \/>\n  we&#8217;ll answer your burning <code>404<\/code> questions.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <b>How do you treat the response code <code>410 \"Gone\"<\/code>?<\/b><br \/>\n  Just like a <code>404<\/code>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <b>Do you index content or follow links from a page with a <code>404<\/code> response code?<\/b>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  We aim to understand as much as possible about your site and its content. So while we wouldn&#8217;t<br \/>\n  want to show a hard <code>404<\/code> to users in search results, we may utilize a <code>404<\/code><br \/>\n  error page&#8217;s content or links if it&#8217;s detected as a signal to help us better understand your site.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Keep in mind that if you want links crawled or content indexed, it&#8217;s far more beneficial to<br \/>\n  include them in a page that&#8217;s not <code>404<\/code>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <b>What about <code>404<\/code> errors with a 10-second <code>meta refresh<\/code>?<\/b>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Yahoo! currently utilizes this method on their <code>404<\/code> errors. They<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/this-is-a-404\" class=\"external-link\">respond with a <code>404<\/code><\/a>,<br \/>\n  but the <code>404<\/code> content also shows:<br \/>\n  <code>&lt;meta http-equiv=\"refresh\" content=\"10;url=https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/?xxx\" \/><\/code>. We feel<br \/>\n  this technique is fine because it reduces confusion by giving users 10 seconds to make a new<br \/>\n  selection, only offering the home page after 10 seconds without the user&#8217;s input.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <b>Should I <code>301<\/code> redirect misspelled <code>404<\/code> errors to the correct URL?<\/b>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Redirecting with <code>301<\/code> status <code>404<\/code> errors is a good idea when it&#8217;s helpful<br \/>\n  to users (that is, not confusing like <code>soft 404<\/code> errors). For instance, if you notice<br \/>\n  that the<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/9679690\" class=\"external-link\">Crawl Errors<\/a><br \/>\n  of Webmaster Tools shows a <code>404<\/code> for a misspelled version of your URL, you can<br \/>\n  <code>301<\/code> the misspelled version of the URL to the correct version.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  For example, if we saw this <code>404<\/code> in Crawl Errors:\n<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\n  we may first correct the typo if it exists on our own site, then <code>301<\/code> the URL to the<br \/>\n  correct version (as the broken link may occur elsewhere on the web):\n<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\n  <b>Have you seen any good <code>404<\/code> errors?<\/b>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Yes, we have!
