One of<br \/>\n  our <a href=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/google-bilgi-bankasi\/deftly-dealing-with-duplicate-content\/\">first posts<\/a> on the<br \/>\n  subject came out in December of &#8217;06, and our<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/google-bilgi-bankasi\/duplicate-content-and-multiple-site-issues\/\">most recent post<\/a> was last<br \/>\n  week. Over the past three years, we&#8217;ve been providing tools and tips to help webmasters control<br \/>\n  which URLs we crawl and index, including a) use of <code>301<\/code> redirects, b)<br \/>\n  <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/support\/webmasters\/bin\/answer.py?answer=44231\" class=\"external-link\">www vs. non-www preferred domain setting<\/a>,<br \/>\n  c) <a href=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/google-bilgi-bankasi\/out-with-the-old-in-with-the-new\/\">change of address option<\/a>, and d)<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/google-bilgi-bankasi\/specify-your-canonical\/\"><code>rel=\"canonical\"<\/code><\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  We&#8217;re happy to announce another feature to assist with managing duplicate content: parameter<br \/>\n  handling. Parameter handling allows you to view which parameters Google believes should be ignored<br \/>\n  or not ignored at crawl time, and to overwrite our suggestions if necessary.\n<\/p>\n<figure class=\"attempt-right\">\n  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/alienroad.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/kb-gorsel\/g-8833e210288a.png\" loading=\"lazy\"\n       alt=\"Screenshot of the URL parameter tool at its launch\" class=\"screenshot\"><figcaption>The URL Parameters tool in 2009<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\n  Let&#8217;s take our old example of a<br \/>\n  <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/static\/search\/blog\/images\/swedish-fish.jpg\">site selling Swedish fish<\/a>. Imagine that your<br \/>\n  preferred version of the URL and its content looks like this:\n<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\n  However, you may also serve the same content on different URLs depending on how the user navigates<br \/>\n  around your site, or your content management system may embed parameters such as <\n  code>sessionid<\/code>:\n<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>\n  With the &#8220;Parameter Handling&#8221; setting, you can now provide suggestions to our crawler to ignore<br \/>\n  the parameters <i>category, trackingid<\/i>, and <i>sessionid<\/i>. If we take your suggestion into<br \/>\n  account, the net result will be a more efficient crawl of your site, and fewer duplicate URLs.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Since we launched the feature, here are some popular questions that have come up:\n<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"are-the-suggestions-provided-a-hint-or-a-command\" tabindex=\"-1\">Are the suggestions provided a hint or a command?<\/h2>\n<p>\n  Your suggestions are considered hints. We&#8217;ll do our best to take them into account; however, there<br \/>\n  may be cases when the provided suggestions may do more harm than good for a site.\n<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"when-do-i-use-parameter-handling-vs-rel=canonical\" data-text='When do I use parameter handling vs rel=\"canonical\"?' tabindex=\"-1\">When do I use parameter handling vs <code>rel=\"canonical\"<\/code>?<\/h2>\n<p>\n  <code>rel=\"canonical\"<\/code> is a great tool to manage duplicate content issues, and has had huge<br \/>\n  adoption.
