\n If you have a sitemap that exceeds the
\n size limits<\/a>,
\n you’ll need to split up your large sitemap into multiple sitemaps such that each new sitemap
\n is below the size limit. Once you’ve split up your sitemap, you can use a sitemap index file
\n as a way to submit many sitemaps at once.\n<\/p>\n

Sitemap index best practices<\/h2>\n

\n The XML format of a sitemap index file is very
\n similar to the XML format of a sitemap file, and it’s defined by the
\n Sitemap Protocol<\/a>.
\n This means that all the sitemap requirements apply to sitemap index files also.\n<\/p>\n

\n The referenced sitemaps must be hosted on the same site as your sitemap index file. This
\n requirement is waived if you set up
\n cross-site submission<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n

\n Sitemaps that are referenced in the sitemap index file must be in the same
\n directory as the sitemap index file, or lower in the site hierarchy. For example, if the
\n sitemap index file is at https:\/\/example.com\/public\/sitemap_index.xml<\/code>, it can
\n only contain sitemaps that are in the same or deeper directory, like
\n https:\/\/example.com\/public\/shared\/...<\/code>.\n<\/p>\n

\n You can submit up to 500 sitemap index files for each site in your Search Console account.\n<\/p>\n

\n The sitemap index tags are defined by the same namespace as generic sitemaps:
\n http:\/\/www.sitemaps.org\/schemas\/sitemap\/0.9<\/code><\/a>\n<\/p>\n

To make sure Google can use your sitemap index, you must use the following required tags:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
Required tags<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n
sitemapindex<\/code><\/td>\nThe root tag of the XML tree. It contains all the other tags.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
sitemap<\/code><\/td>\n\n The parent tag for each sitemap listed in the file. It’s the only direct child of the sitemapindex<\/code>
\n tag.\n <\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
loc<\/code><\/td>\n\n The location (URL) of the sitemap. It’s a child of the sitemap<\/code> tag. A sitemap
\n index file may have up to 50,000 loc<\/code> tags.\n <\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n

\n Additionally, the following optional tags may help Google schedule your sitemaps for crawling:\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

lastmod<\/code><\/td>\n\n Identifies the time that the corresponding sitemap file was modified. It
\n can be a child of a sitemap<\/code> tag. The value for the lastmod<\/code> tag must be in
