Yandex takes account of a specific set, and its handling of conflicts is unusual enough to be worth learning.<\/p>\n<h2>The tags Yandex reads<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><code>description<\/code><\/strong> \u2014 a source for the snippet description.<\/li>\n<li><strong><code>keywords<\/code><\/strong> \u2014 Yandex states it &#8220;can influence the page&#8217;s relevance to search queries&#8221;. Unlike Google, it is not declared dead here.<\/li>\n<li><strong><code>robots<\/code><\/strong> \u2014 loading and indexing rules.<\/li>\n<li><strong><code>viewport<\/code><\/strong> \u2014 mobile adaptation. Without it, mobile browsers render for a desktop screen and then compensate by scaling or cropping, which is a mobile-friendliness failure caused by an omission rather than a design flaw.<\/li>\n<li><strong><code>Content-Type<\/code><\/strong> \u2014 document type and encoding.<\/li>\n<li><strong><code>refresh<\/code><\/strong> \u2014 with a small delay, treated as a temporary redirect equivalent to <code>302<\/code>\/<code>303<\/code>\/<code>307<\/code>, and usable when moving a site.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The directives<\/h2>\n<p>Available in the <code>robots<\/code> meta tag or the <code>X-Robots-Tag<\/code> HTTP header:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><code>noindex<\/code> \u2014 the page text is not indexed and the page stays out of results.<\/li>\n<li><code>nofollow<\/code> \u2014 links are not followed, though the robot may learn of them elsewhere.<\/li>\n<li><code>none<\/code> \u2014 both.<\/li>\n<li><code>noarchive<\/code> \u2014 no saved-copy link in results.<\/li>\n<li><code>index<\/code>, <code>follow<\/code>, <code>archive<\/code>, <code>all<\/code> \u2014 cancel prohibitions; these are the defaults and can be omitted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The conflict rule that surprises people<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Permissive directives take priority over prohibiting ones.<\/strong> A page carrying both <code>all<\/code> and <code>noindex<\/code> is indexed. This is the opposite of what most people assume, and it means a stray permissive tag left in a template silently overrides a deliberate exclusion.<\/p>\n<h2>Robot-specific tags<\/h2>\n<p><code>&lt;meta name=\"yandex\" ...&gt;<\/code> addresses Yandex robots only, and when both a general and a Yandex-specific tag are present <strong>Yandex applies both<\/strong> \u2014 <code>robots: noindex<\/code> plus <code>yandex: nofollow<\/code> is read as <code>noindex, nofollow<\/code>.<\/p>\n<h2>The precondition<\/h2>\n<p><strong>If the page is blocked in <code>robots.txt<\/code>, none of this applies<\/strong> \u2014 the robot never fetches the page and never sees the directive.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Meta tags tell the robot how to load, index and display a page.
