Yandex’s indexing guidance is a checklist with specific technical limits attached \u2014 the limits are the part worth memorising.<\/p>\n

The setup steps<\/h2>\n

  1. Add the site in Yandex Webmaster.<\/li>\n
  2. Submit a sitemap<\/strong>, which can also express crawl priority \u2014 telling the robot which pages update frequently so it plans accordingly.<\/li>\n
  3. Configure robots.txt<\/strong>: Disallow<\/code> for technical and low-value sections, and Clean-param<\/code> for insignificant CGI parameters. Yandex spells out the failure mode for session identifiers: formally distinct URLs with identical content, and if there are many, the robot indexes those instead of downloading useful content<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The hard limits<\/h2>\n
      \n
    • Documents over 10 MB are not indexed.<\/strong><\/li>\n
    • Many CGI parameters, deeply nested directories, or excessively long URLs can prevent indexing.<\/li>\n
    • PDFs: only text is indexed.<\/strong> Text rendered as an image is not \u2014 which makes every scanned brochure and image-based catalogue invisible.<\/li>\n
    • Open Office XML and OpenDocument formats are indexed, though support for new formats can lag.<\/li>\n
    • .swf<\/code> files are indexed where directly linked or embedded via object<\/code> o embed<\/code>; content inside a Flash file can lead the robot back to the containing HTML document.<\/li>\n
    • frameset<\/code> and frame<\/code> content is indexed, with the source document identified from the frame contents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Two server-side requirements<\/h2>\n
        \n
      • Non-existent URLs must return 404.<\/strong> On receiving it, the search engine removes the document from the index \u2014 which is the mechanism, and the reason a soft-404 leaves deleted pages in place indefinitely. Everything that should be indexed must return 200 OK<\/code>.<\/li>\n
      • HTTP headers must be correct<\/strong>, and Yandex singles out the response to If-Modified-Since<\/code>: the Last-Modified<\/code> header must carry the document’s genuine modification date. A server that lies about this \u2014 returning the current time for every page \u2014 forces re-downloads of unchanged content and spends crawl capacity for nothing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        The practical priorities<\/h2>\n

        Of everything here, two items produce most of the benefit on real sites: correct 404<\/code> handling, and honest Last-Modified<\/code> with working conditional responses.
