A sitemap tells search engines the site’s current structure. Yandex supports XML<\/strong> (recommended, because it carries extra information) and TXT<\/strong> (a plain list of URLs). It does not guarantee that the URLs will appear in results.<\/p>\n

When you actually need one<\/h2>\n

Yandex is candid that its algorithms usually find pages through internal and external links, but the robot can miss some. A sitemap is worthwhile when the site has many pages<\/strong>, pages with no navigation links<\/strong>, or a deeply nested structure<\/strong>. A small, well-linked site gains little from one.<\/p>\n

The XML elements<\/h2>\n

  • loc<\/code><\/strong> \u2014 required, the page address.<\/li>\n
  • lastmod<\/code> \u2014 last update date.<\/li>\n
  • changefreq<\/code> \u2014 how often the page changes.<\/li>\n
  • priority<\/code> \u2014 0.0 to 1.0, and Yandex explains what it does: the robot loads pages sorted by the presence and value of this coefficient<\/strong>. It orders crawling. Set it for the URLs that genuinely matter, and it means nothing if every page is 1.0.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Each optional element has a maximum size of 100 bytes.<\/p>\n

    Requirements<\/h2>\n
      \n
    • UTF-8<\/strong>; Cyrillic URLs accepted in original or encoded form.<\/li>\n
    • 50,000 links<\/strong> maximum \u2014 split across files with an index file beyond that.<\/li>\n
    • 50 MB<\/strong> uncompressed.<\/li>\n
    • Only URLs from the domain the file sits on, and the file must be on that domain.<\/li>\n
    • The file must return 200 OK<\/code>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      RSS and Atom feeds are not supported<\/strong> as sitemaps.<\/p>\n

      The step people skip<\/h2>\n

      Yandex’s procedure begins with defining canonical URLs<\/strong> for the pages that will be listed. A sitemap full of duplicate variants tells the robot to crawl work you have already decided is redundant. Then create the file, validate it<\/strong>, and declare it in robots.txt<\/code> or in the console.<\/p>\n

      For large sites<\/h2>\n

      Drop pages Yandex already knows and keep the file for new and frequently updated ones, marking volatile files with lastmod<\/code> in the index file.
