It is the smallest piece of brand presence in search and one of the few visual elements a site fully controls.<\/p>\n<h2>Format and size<\/h2>\n<p><strong>120 \u00d7 120, 32 \u00d7 32 or 16 \u00d7 16 pixels.<\/strong> Formats: <strong>SVG (recommended)<\/strong>, ICO, GIF, JPEG, PNG or BMP. No animation. Yandex recommends 120 \u00d7 120 or SVG so the logo stays clear in its services.<\/p>\n<h2>Installation<\/h2>\n<p>Place the file in the site root and reference it in the <code>head<\/code> of the home page:<\/p>\n<pre><code>&lt;link rel=\"icon\" href=\"https:\/\/example.com\/favicon.ico\" type=\"image\/x-icon\"&gt;<\/code><\/pre>\n<p><code>rel<\/code> accepts <code>icon<\/code> ou <code>shortcut icon<\/code>. <code>type<\/code> must match the format \u2014 <code>image\/svg+xml<\/code>, <code>image\/x-icon<\/code>, <code>image\/png<\/code> and so on. Cyrillic URLs must be given in Punycode. <strong>If several favicon links are present, the robot may pick any of them<\/strong>, which is the usual reason a site displays an icon nobody recognises.<\/p>\n<h2>Verifying it<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The file must be reachable directly, returning <code>200 OK<\/code>.<\/li>\n<li>It must not be blocked in <code>robots.txt<\/code> \u2014 <strong>check the directory as well as the file<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Site diagnostics reports three specific errors: a status other than <code>200<\/code>, a redirect on the file URL, and an incorrect <code>type<\/code> value.<\/li>\n<li>The full check list in site diagnostics shows &#8220;Everything is OK&#8221; once the robot has processed the file.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Timing, and the fast route<\/h2>\n<p>Once downloaded, it appears in results <strong>within two weeks<\/strong>. To change or remove it, update or delete the file \u2014 again two weeks. But submitting the home page for reindexing cuts that to <strong>about three days<\/strong>, which is the single most useful fact on this page.<\/p>\n<h2>Two things worth knowing<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Yandex may take the icon from an <code>apple-touch-icon<\/code> tag as well.<\/li>\n<li><strong>If the robot cannot reach the site during indexing, results may show the hosting provider&#8217;s favicon<\/strong> \u2014 the parking-page icon.
