unexpected circumstances, the Chrome team decided to postpone the restriction on the <code>SharedArrayBuffer<\/code> object on desktop to Chrome 92 (originally Chrome 91).<\/aside>\n<p>\nSome of you might have received an email from Google Search Console with the subject &#8220;New requirements for <code>SharedArrayBuffers<\/code>&#8220;.<br \/>\nWe received feedback that the message was confusing, and wanted to give some more insight into the issue, so that you can decide which next steps are appropriate.<br \/>\nWe also updated <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/web.dev\/articles\/cross-origin-isolation-guide\">the guide on enabling cross-origin isolation<\/a> to include additional details.\n<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-did-i-receive-the-message\" tabindex=\"-1\">Why did I receive the message?<\/h2>\n<p>\nYou received the message because we&#8217;ve detected that JavaScript on your website was using the <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/developer.mozilla.org\/docs\/Web\/JavaScript\/Reference\/Global_Objects\/SharedArrayBuffer\"><code>SharedArrayBuffer<\/code><\/a> object at the time of the message.<br \/>\nThe usage might be due to frameworks, libraries, or other third-party content included within your website.\n<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-the-sharedarraybuffer\" tabindex=\"-1\">What is the <code>SharedArrayBuffer<\/code>?<\/h2>\n<p>\n<code>SharedArrayBuffer<\/code> is a JavaScript object to share a memory space across threads on a website.<br \/>\nIt was used by websites before the vulnerability called <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/web\/updates\/2018\/02\/meltdown-spectre\">Spectre<\/a> was found.<br \/>\nHowever, because Spectre was a CPU level vulnerability and it&#8217;s unlikely to be fixed in the foreseeable future, browsers decided to disable the <code>SharedArrayBuffer<\/code> object.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nWhile Chrome re-enabled it on desktop with <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/security.googleblog.com\/2018\/07\/mitigating-spectre-with-site-isolation.html\">Site Isolation<\/a> as a temporary remedy, <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/web.dev\/articles\/coop-coep\">cross-origin isolation<\/a> was standardized as a way to safely enable the <code>SharedArrayBuffer<\/code> object.<br \/>\nStarting with version 92, planned to be released in late May 2021, Chrome will gate the <code>SharedArrayBuffer<\/code> object behind cross-origin isolation.<br \/>\nFirefox enabled the <code>SharedArrayBuffer<\/code> object on a cross-origin isolated environment as well in version 76.<br \/>\nWe hope other browsers will follow soon.\n<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"finding-sharedarraybuffer-object-usage-on-your-site\" tabindex=\"-1\">Finding <code>SharedArrayBuffer<\/code> object usage on your site<\/h2>\n<p>\nYou have two options:\n<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Use <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/web\/tools\/chrome-devtools\">Chrome DevTools<\/a> and inspect important pages.\n<li>(Advanced) Use the <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/web\/updates\/2018\/09\/reportingapi\">Reporting API<\/a> to send deprecation reports to a reporting endpoint.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\nLearn how to take the above approaches at <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/web.dev\/articles\/cross-origin-isolation-guide\">Determine where the <code>SharedArrayBuffer<\/code> object is used on your website<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"next-steps\" tabindex=\"-1\">Next steps<\/h2>\n<p>\nFor next steps, we recommend:\n<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Determine where the <code>SharedArrayBuffer<\/code> object is used on your website.\n<li>Decide if the usage is necessary.\n<li>Fix the issue by either removing the functionality, or by <a class=\"external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/web.dev\/articles\/cross-origin-isolation-guide\">enabling cross-origin isolation<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\nIf you haven&#8217;t heard about the <code>SharedArrayBuffer<\/code> object, and you received a Search Console message about it, it&#8217;s highly likely a third-party resource on your website is using it.<br \/>\nOnce you determine which pages are affected, and who the owner of the resource is, reach out to the resource provider and ask them to fix the issue.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAfter Chrome 92 is released, the <code>SharedArrayBuffer<\/code> object without cross-origin isolation will no longer be functional.<br \/>\nIn practice, this means that Chrome users on your site may experience degraded performance similar to other situations where the <code>SharedArrayBuffer<\/code> object is not supported.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nWe hope this clarification was useful, even if you didn&#8217;t receive the message.<br \/>\nIf you have any questions, we&#8217;d
