AI keyword research and clustering uses language models and search data to find keyword ideas and group them by meaning and search intent, so each group can be served by one page. It turns a spreadsheet of thousands of terms into a site plan in hours rather than days. The output still needs an SEO specialist to check intent, business value and overlap with existing pages.

What is keyword clustering, and why does it matter?

Clustering means grouping keywords that should be answered by the same page. “Best running shoes for flat feet” and “running shoes for overpronation” often share one intent; “how to tie running shoes” does not. Getting the groups right stops two pages on your site from competing for the same search, a problem often called keyword cannibalisation.

AI for Keyword Research and Clustering: What It Does for Marketers — overview

Manual clustering works for a few hundred terms. For a large e-commerce catalogue or a content programme covering several countries, it becomes impractical, and that is where AI and automation help most.

How do AI clustering methods work?

There are three main approaches, and good tools often combine them.

  • SERP overlap: keywords are grouped when Google shows many of the same URLs for them. This reflects how Google itself sees intent.
  • Semantic embeddings: each keyword is turned into a numeric vector by a language model, and terms with similar meaning are grouped mathematically.
  • LLM classification: a model such as GPT, Claude or Gemini is asked to sort keywords into intent groups or topics using instructions and examples.

SERP overlap is usually the most reliable for deciding which keywords share a page, because it is based on live results. Embeddings are faster and cheaper but can group terms that sound alike yet have different intent. LLM classification is flexible and good for labelling, such as tagging each group as informational, commercial or transactional.

AI for Keyword Research and Clustering: What It Does for Marketers — in practice
Which tools offer AI keyword clustering?

Semrush, Ahrefs and SE Ranking all include keyword grouping or clustering features in their keyword research tools, with differences in method and limits. Dedicated tools such as Keyword Insights focus on SERP-based clustering. Some teams build their own using an SEO data API for search results, an embedding model and a short script.

General chat assistants can also cluster a pasted list, but they do not see live search results unless connected to a search tool. Use them for labelling and naming groups rather than for deciding page boundaries.

For keyword ideas, Google Keyword Planner and Google Search Console remain the most direct sources of real data. Search Console shows the queries your site already appears for, which is often the best seed list you have.

How should a marketer run a clustering project?

Step 1: build the seed list

Combine Search Console queries, competitor keywords from Semrush or Ahrefs, Keyword Planner ideas and terms from sales calls or support tickets. Remove obvious junk, brand terms of competitors you will not target and terms in the wrong language.

Step 2: cluster

Run SERP-based clustering for the final page plan. Set the overlap threshold in the tool; a stricter threshold creates more, smaller groups. Run the same list at two thresholds and compare.

Step 3: label intent and value

Use an LLM to tag each cluster with intent, funnel stage and the most likely content type, such as category page, guide or comparison. Then add business value by hand: which clusters relate to products or services that actually make money.

Step 4: map to pages

Match each cluster to an existing URL or mark it as a new page. Where two existing pages target one cluster, plan a merge with a redirect.

Where does AI get keyword research wrong?

AI tools are confident even when wrong. A language model asked for search volumes may invent numbers; volumes must come from a data source. Embeddings may merge “apple” the fruit and “Apple” the company. Local intent differs by country, so clusters built on US results may not hold for Turkey or Germany.

  • Always run SERP data for the country and language you target.
  • Never use model-generated search volumes.
  • Check a sample of each cluster by searching it yourself.
  • Watch for mixed intent, where results show both guides and product pages.
  • Review clusters again after major Google updates, since results shift.
How does clustering change with AI search?

AI Overviews in Google and answer engines such as ChatGPT search and Perplexity answer longer, conversational questions. That favours pages that cover a topic fully, with clear sections answering related questions. Clustering supports this, because a well-built cluster is effectively a list of the questions one page should answer.

It also helps to add question-style queries from tools such as AlsoAsked or the People Also Ask boxes, and to cluster them with the main terms. Those questions often become the H2 headings of the page.

How Alien Road applies AI for keyword research and clustering

Our SEO team starts each engagement by pulling the client’s Search Console data and the current page inventory, then adding competitor and planner data for each target market. Lists are built per country and language, never translated from one market to another.

Clustering runs on live search results for each market, and a language model labels intent and suggests page types. An SEO specialist then reviews every high-value cluster, assigns it to a URL and flags cannibalisation.

We report rankings and organic clicks by cluster rather than by single keyword in Search Console and the client’s SEO tool, so progress shows at the level of topics and pages.

Clusters also make reporting easier to read. A stakeholder rarely cares whether one keyword moved from position seven to five, but they understand that the “running shoes for flat feet” topic now brings twice the clicks it did last quarter. Group your rank tracking by cluster from the start.

Where to start this week

Export the last three months of queries from Google Search Console for one section of your site. Run them through the clustering feature of the SEO tool you already pay for, using your target country’s results. Pick the five largest clusters and check which of your URLs ranks for each. Any cluster split across two of your pages is your first fix.
