ChatGPT search is the feature in OpenAI’s ChatGPT that fetches current information from the web and answers with cited sources. For SEO, it adds a new place to be found: instead of ranking as one of ten links, your page needs to be retrievable, clearly written and trustworthy enough to be cited in an answer. Most of the groundwork is classic SEO, with a few specific additions.

How does ChatGPT search find information?

When a question needs fresh or specific information, ChatGPT runs searches, reads selected pages and writes an answer with inline citations and a list of sources. OpenAI has said it works with third-party search providers and its own crawling. Microsoft’s Bing has long been reported as an important source, which is one reason SEO teams pay attention to Bing Webmaster Tools again.

ChatGPT Search and SEO: What Changes for Organic Visibility — overview

OpenAI runs several crawlers with different purposes. OAI-SearchBot is used for search features; GPTBot is used to collect data for training models; ChatGPT-User fetches pages when a user’s request triggers a visit. You can control them separately in robots.txt. Blocking GPTBot does not remove you from search results, but blocking OAI-SearchBot can.

What changes for organic visibility?

Traditional SEO measures rankings and clicks. In AI answers, the unit is a citation, and a user may get what they need without clicking at all. That changes what success looks like:

  • Being cited in an answer for an important query can matter even if clicks are few.
  • Pages that answer one question clearly near the top tend to be easier to quote.
  • Brand mentions across other trusted sites influence if you appear at all.
  • Freshness counts for queries about prices, comparisons and recent changes.
  • Clicks from AI answers are often fewer but come from people further along in their decision.
How do you improve the chance of being cited?

There is no published ranking formula for ChatGPT search, so be wary of anyone promising one. The practical advice overlaps heavily with good SEO and the work often called generative engine optimisation (GEO):

ChatGPT Search and SEO: What Changes for Organic Visibility — in practice
  • Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and make sure pages render without heavy client-side scripts.
  • Put a direct answer in the first paragraph, then supporting detail.
  • Use descriptive headings phrased the way people ask questions.
  • Include concrete facts: specifications, prices with dates, steps, definitions.
  • Keep author, date and organisation information visible on the page.
  • Maintain consistent business details across your site, Google Business Profile, Bing Places and major directories.
  • Earn mentions in reputable publications and community sites in your field.

Content formats that tend to get quoted

  • Clear definitions and short explanations.
  • Comparison tables with up-to-date details.
  • Step-by-step guides with numbered steps.
  • FAQ sections with specific, factual answers.
How do you measure ChatGPT traffic and visibility?

Some referrals from ChatGPT arrive with a utm_source=chatgpt.com parameter, and others show chatgpt.com as the referrer. In Google Analytics 4, create a custom channel group or exploration that isolates traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and similar sources. Treat these numbers as a floor, since some visits arrive with no referrer.

Visibility itself is harder to measure. A manual method works: keep a list of 20 to 50 important questions, ask them in ChatGPT with search enabled each month, and record if your brand is cited, mentioned or absent. Several commercial tools now automate this kind of tracking, with different methods, so compare their samples with your own checks.

How Alien Road applies ChatGPT search in GEO work

In a typical engagement, discovery starts with a technical check: robots.txt rules for OpenAI’s crawlers, rendering, page speed and indexation in both Google and Bing. We then build a question set from search console data, sales calls and support tickets, and record current citations in ChatGPT and other AI assistants.

Setup focuses on the pages that should answer those questions. We restructure them with direct answers, clearer headings, up-to-date facts and visible authorship, and work on mentions in relevant publications through digital PR.

Measurement repeats the question set monthly and tracks AI referral traffic in GA4, alongside normal organic metrics. Reporting to the client shows which questions gained or lost citations and which pages changed, so progress connects to specific work.

What should you not do?

Avoid publishing large volumes of thin pages written to target AI answers. Search engines treat scaled low-value content as spam, and AI systems that rely on search results inherit that judgement. Avoid hiding text for crawlers or stuffing pages with question lists that have no real answers. And do not block all AI crawlers in a panic without understanding which ones affect search visibility.

Does ChatGPT search replace Google?

Not at the time of writing. Google still handles most search queries worldwide, and its own AI Overviews and AI Mode are reshaping results there too. ChatGPT search is better thought of as an additional discovery channel that is growing, used heavily for research-style questions, comparisons and how-to queries.

The good news is that the work overlaps. Clear answers, factual depth, good technical health and a strong reputation help in Google, Bing, ChatGPT and Perplexity at once. Teams that split their effort into separate tactics for each engine usually spread themselves thin.

How should local businesses think about it?

Local queries, such as a dentist or restaurant nearby, work differently. ChatGPT draws on map and business listing data from partners for many local answers, along with reviews and websites. Accurate, consistent listings, recent reviews and a website that states services, prices and opening hours plainly give the assistant facts it can use. Check how your business appears by asking local questions from your city, and correct any outdated details at the source listing.

Where to start this week

Open your robots.txt and check the rules for OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot and ChatGPT-User, then decide deliberately which to allow. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools if you have not already.

Write down ten questions customers ask before buying from you, ask each in ChatGPT with search on, and note who gets cited. Pick the question where a competitor is cited and you are not, and rewrite your best page on that topic with a direct answer in the first paragraph.
