An ElevenLabs implementation moves from pilot to production safely when four things are settled early: written consent for any cloned voice, a pronunciation and style guide, a human quality review step, and clear disclosure rules. ElevenLabs generates speech from text, clones voices and dubs audio into other languages; the checklist below turns those features into a repeatable process.
ElevenLabs is an AI audio company whose platform offers text to speech, voice cloning, a shared voice library, dubbing, and conversational voice agents, available through a web studio and an API. Marketing teams use it for video voiceovers, product explainers, podcast intros, localised ads and accessibility audio. The technology is good enough that the hard parts are now process, rights and quality control.

What should a pilot prove?
A pilot is not a demo. It should answer three questions with real content: does the voice fit the brand, how much editing does each minute of audio need, and does the audience react differently to synthetic narration. Pick one content type, for example ten short product videos, and keep everything else unchanged.
Define success in advance. A reasonable target might be that a reviewer approves at least most clips after one round of fixes, and that viewer retention on the videos is not worse than the human-voiced versions. Write the numbers down before you start so the result is not judged on impressions.
Phase 1 checklist: rights and consent
- Decide whether you will use a stock voice from the library, a designed voice, or a clone of a real person.
- For any clone, get written consent from the speaker that covers the uses, languages, duration and payment.
- Use only recordings you own or are licensed to use as training samples.
- Check the ElevenLabs terms and the voice library licence for commercial use on your plan.
- Agree internally that no one clones a voice of a public figure, competitor or employee without a signed agreement.
ElevenLabs offers instant cloning from short samples and a professional cloning option trained on longer recordings, and it applies verification steps for professional clones. Those platform safeguards help, but they do not replace your own contract with the speaker.

Phase 2 checklist: voice and script setup
Synthetic speech exposes weak scripts. Long sentences, stacked clauses and ambiguous abbreviations sound worse when read by a model than by a professional narrator who would quietly fix them.
- Write scripts for the ear: short sentences, one idea each, numbers written the way they should be read.
- Build a pronunciation list for brand names, product codes and place names, and use the platform’s pronunciation tools to apply it.
- Choose model settings such as stability and similarity, record the values, and keep them fixed across a series.
- Generate two or three takes of tricky lines and pick the best rather than accepting the first.
- For multilingual work, have a native speaker check each language version, including dubbed output.
Phase 3 checklist: quality review
Every clip goes through a listener before it goes public. The reviewer should check for mispronounced names, odd emphasis, clipped endings, unnatural pauses and audio artefacts. Keep a simple log of what was wrong and how it was fixed; after a few weeks, the log becomes your style guide.
Mix matters too. Generated voice is clean, which can sound flat against music. Add the same light processing you would give a recorded voice, and check loudness against the platform you publish on.
How should AI voice be disclosed?
Disclosure rules depend on the market and the platform. Some ad platforms and social networks ask creators to label realistic synthetic media, and the EU AI Act includes transparency obligations for certain AI-generated content on a phased timetable. A plain rule works for most brands: disclose when a voice imitates a real person, and never use synthetic voice to make a person appear to say something they did not agree to.
For customer service voice agents, tell callers at the start that they are speaking with an automated assistant. People accept automation more easily when they were not misled about it.
Phase 4 checklist: production rollout
- Move generation to the API or a shared workspace so files, settings and history are not on one person’s laptop.
- Store final scripts and audio files together, with the voice and settings used.
- Set user permissions so only approved staff can create or clone voices.
- Track usage against your plan’s character quota to avoid surprises mid-campaign.
- Schedule a quarterly review of consent agreements and voice licences.
Where does AI voice fall short?
Emotional range is still narrower than a skilled actor’s, especially for comedy, grief or long dramatic reads. Very short brand stings can sound generic. And localisation is not only translation: humour, idioms and cultural references still need a human writer. Use AI voice where clarity and speed matter most, and book actors where performance is the point.
How Alien Road applies ElevenLabs in video production
In a typical engagement, discovery begins with the content plan: which videos need narration, in which languages, how often they change and who approves them. Short explainers that are updated often are strong candidates; flagship brand films usually are not.
Setup covers the checklist above. We agree the voice choice with the client, collect consent where a real speaker is cloned, build the pronunciation list and lock model settings for the series. Scripts are written for audio first, then generated, reviewed by a native speaker and mixed with the edit.
Measurement compares the pilot videos with earlier human-voiced ones on retention, completion rate and, where relevant, click-through. We also track production time per finished minute. The report shows both, so the decision to scale is based on audience response as well as cost.
Where to start this week
Choose five short videos you already plan to make. Write the scripts for the ear, pick a library voice with commercial rights on your plan, and build a pronunciation list of at least ten brand terms. Generate, review and publish them next to comparable human-voiced videos, then compare retention after two weeks.
