Meta AI and Llama give e-commerce brands two different routes into AI. Meta AI is the assistant built into Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger, along with AI features in Meta’s ad and business tools. Llama is Meta’s family of open-weight language models that businesses can download, run on their own infrastructure or use through cloud providers. The practical use cases differ for each.
What is the difference between Meta AI and Llama?
Meta AI is a consumer product. People chat with it inside Meta’s apps, ask questions, generate images and get suggestions. Brands do not control it, but they are affected by it, because shoppers increasingly ask it about products and use it inside the same apps where they see ads.

Llama is a model, not a product. Meta publishes the weights under its own community licence, which permits commercial use with certain conditions, including extra terms for very large companies. Read the licence for the version you use. Llama models are available on platforms such as Hugging Face, Amazon Bedrock, Google Vertex AI, Microsoft Azure and others, and can be run locally with tools like Ollama or vLLM.
Which Meta AI features matter to an online store?
Most direct value comes through Meta’s business tools rather than the consumer chatbot.
- Generative features in Ads Manager under Advantage+ creative: background generation, image expansion and text variations for ads.
- Business AI features on WhatsApp and Messenger, which Meta has been testing and rolling out in some markets to answer customer questions on a business’s behalf.
- Meta Business Suite tools that suggest post text and help manage messages.
Availability varies by country and account. Check what is switched on in your Ads Manager and Business Suite rather than relying on announcements.

Use case 1: ad creative variations
A clothing brand with a strong product photo can use Advantage+ creative’s generative features to test different backgrounds or aspect ratios without a new shoot. This is useful for quickly matching Stories, Reels and Feed formats.
Keep control. Review every generated variation for accuracy: a background that suggests a product is waterproof when it is not, or an expanded image that adds odd objects, can mislead customers. Switch off enhancements you have not approved.
Use case 2: customer messaging on WhatsApp and Messenger
Many stores in Turkey, the Middle East and Latin America take a large share of enquiries through WhatsApp. An AI layer can answer routine questions about shipping times, sizes, opening hours or order status.
There are two ways to build it. Meta’s own business AI tools, where available, are quick to set up but offer limited control. Alternatively, connect the WhatsApp Business Platform API to your own system that uses a Llama model, or another model, with your product and policy data. That takes more work but lets you decide exactly what it says and where data goes.
Use case 3: product data enrichment with Llama
Large catalogues often have messy data: inconsistent titles, missing attributes, supplier descriptions in mixed languages. A Llama model running on your own infrastructure can process this in bulk.
- Extract attributes such as material, colour and size from free-text descriptions into structured fields.
- Standardise titles into a fixed pattern.
- Draft descriptions in several languages from the structured data.
- Flag products with conflicting information for a person to check.
Running the model yourself means catalogue data and supplier files do not leave your environment, which some brands require.
Use case 4: internal search and support tools
A Llama model combined with retrieval over your own documents, such as returns policy, supplier contracts and product manuals, can power an internal assistant for customer service staff. Agents ask a question and get an answer with a link to the source document, which speeds up responses and keeps them consistent.
The same approach can improve on-site search by understanding natural-language queries like “warm waterproof jacket for hiking under 3,000 lira”, though dedicated search vendors may be faster to deploy.
When is Llama the right choice over a hosted model?
Open-weight models are not always cheaper or better. Hosted models from several providers can be stronger on difficult reasoning and need no infrastructure. Llama makes sense when some of these apply.
- Data must stay on your own servers or in a specific region.
- Volume is high and per-request API costs would be significant.
- You want to fine-tune or adapt the model, for example with LoRA, to your catalogue language.
- You need predictable behaviour that does not change when a provider updates its model.
The trade-off is engineering effort: hosting, monitoring, updates and security become your responsibility.
What are the limits and risks?
Generated text can contain errors, so product claims need review. Customer-facing bots must hand over to a person for complaints, refunds and anything sensitive. Personal data sent through messaging must be handled in line with the GDPR, KVKK or local rules. And with Meta’s own consumer AI, you cannot control what it says about your products, only make sure your public information is accurate and complete.
How Alien Road applies Meta AI and Llama for e-commerce clients
In a typical engagement, Alien Road separates the two tracks. For Meta’s built-in features, the team audits which Advantage+ creative and messaging options are active in the client’s accounts, agrees which are allowed, and tests generated variations against standard creative with clear naming so results can be split in reports.
For Llama, work starts with a data task such as catalogue cleaning or multilingual descriptions. A small pilot runs on a sample of products, outputs are reviewed by the client’s merchandising team, and error rates are recorded. Only when the pilot meets agreed quality thresholds does it extend to the full catalogue. Reporting covers time saved, error rates and, for ads, cost per result against the control.
Where to start this week
Open Ads Manager and check which Advantage+ creative enhancements are switched on by default in your latest campaign. Decide which you want and turn off the rest.
Then export 50 product descriptions with messy data and test whether a Llama model, through a cloud console or locally with Ollama, can extract clean attributes from them. Check every result by hand before deciding whether to scale.
