Prompt engineering is the practice of writing instructions, context and examples so that an AI model produces the output you need. For SEO it matters in two directions. Inside the team, good prompts turn AI into a dependable assistant for research, briefs and audits instead of a source of generic text. Outside, the prompts users type into ChatGPT, Gemini or Google’s AI Mode are the new queries your content has to answer.

What is prompt engineering, in practical terms?

A prompt is everything the model sees before it answers: the instruction, background information, examples and any rules about format. Prompt engineering means designing that input deliberately. OpenAI, Anthropic and Google all publish prompting guides, and they agree on the basics: be specific, give context, show examples, ask for a clear output format and break complex tasks into steps.

Prompt Engineering and SEO: What Changes for Organic Visibility — overview

It is less mysterious than the name suggests. A good prompt reads like a good brief to a freelance writer. A bad one reads like a sticky note that says “write something about SEO.”

How do prompts change SEO work inside the team?

Most SEO teams now use AI for some tasks. The quality difference between teams comes largely from their prompts and the data they feed in.

Weak prompts produce weak work. “Write a 1,000-word article about running shoes” gives a generic piece that repeats what is already ranking and adds nothing. Google’s guidance is clear that using AI is not against its policies, but content created mainly to manipulate rankings, including scaled content with little value, is.

A stronger prompt for the same task includes the target query, the search intent, the reader’s level, sources or expert notes to draw from, a required structure, words to avoid and a request to flag uncertain claims. The output is still a draft, but a draft worth editing.

Prompts that work well for SEO tasks

  • Keyword clustering: give a list of keywords with volumes and ask the model to group them by intent and suggest one primary page per group.
  • Brief writing: provide the top-ranking URLs’ headings and ask for a brief covering gaps they miss, not a copy of what they share.
  • Meta descriptions: supply the page’s first paragraphs and ask for three options under 155 characters that include the main term once.
  • Internal linking: give a page’s text and a list of your URLs with titles, and ask which links fit naturally and where.
  • Audit summaries: paste a crawl export and ask for issues ranked by likely impact, with the evidence for each.
What makes an SEO prompt reliable?

Reliability matters more than cleverness. A prompt that works once and fails the next day is not useful for a team. A few habits help:

  • Use templates with fixed sections: role, task, context, rules, output format.
  • Provide real data rather than asking the model to recall it; models do not know your rankings or traffic.
  • Ask for structured output, such as a table or JSON, when results feed into another step.
  • Include one or two examples of good output.
  • Tell the model what to do when it is unsure, for example to write “unknown” rather than guess.
  • Test the template on several inputs before sharing it with the team.

Keep templates in a shared document or prompt library with version notes, so improvements spread across the team.

How do user prompts change organic visibility?

The second change is outside your team. People increasingly ask AI systems full questions instead of typing short keywords. Google reports that queries in AI Mode tend to be longer and more conversational than classic searches. ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Gemini receive similar requests.

These prompts often include context and constraints: “I run a small bakery in Izmir, what is the cheapest way to start Google Ads with a budget of 200 dollars a month?” An AI answer engine breaks that into sub-questions, searches for each and assembles an answer from several sources. Google calls a version of this query fan-out.

For content, this has three consequences. Pages that answer one specific sub-question clearly are easier to cite than broad pages that cover everything vaguely. Context matters, so content that addresses a particular audience, location or budget level can match more of these detailed prompts. And clear structure, with question headings and direct answers, makes extraction easier.

Can you optimize for prompts the way you optimize for keywords?

Partly. You cannot see AI prompts the way you see keyword volumes; most platforms do not share that data. But you can approximate them.

Collect real questions from sales calls, support tickets, site search logs and the “People also ask” boxes in Google. Expand your keyword list with the constraints people add: budget, location, company size, experience level. Then check your content: does a page exist that answers each important question directly in its first lines?

Some tools now track brand mentions in AI answers for sets of test prompts. Treat their results as samples, since AI answers vary between runs and users.

How Alien Road applies prompt engineering in SEO

In a typical engagement our team starts by reviewing how the client already uses AI for content and SEO: which tools, which prompts and what happens to the output. We usually find a few useful habits and many one-off prompts that nobody can reproduce.

Setup involves building a prompt library for the client’s recurring tasks, including briefs, meta descriptions, clustering and audit summaries, with fixed templates and examples drawn from their own best pages. We also compile a prompt set of 30 to 50 realistic user questions for the client’s market to test AI answer visibility.

Measurement covers both sides: editing time and quality scores for AI-assisted drafts, and monthly checks of whether the client is cited for the test prompts in major AI assistants. Reporting combines these with standard Search Console metrics.

Where to start this week

Choose the SEO task your team repeats most often, such as writing meta descriptions or content briefs. Write one template with the six habits above, test it on five real pages and compare the output with what the team currently produces. Then list 20 questions customers actually ask you and check whether your site answers each one in the first paragraph of a page.
