Perplexity is an AI answer engine that searches the web in real time and replies with cited sources. Implementing it well has two sides: making your site easy for Perplexity to find and cite, and using Perplexity inside your own team for research with proper checks. This checklist covers both, from a small pilot to normal production use.

What is Perplexity and how does it pick sources?

Perplexity, founded in 2022, combines search with large language models. A user asks a question, Perplexity retrieves pages from its own index and other sources, then writes an answer with numbered citations. Pro users can pick underlying models from several providers, and features such as Pro Search and Deep Research run longer multi-step searches.

Perplexity Implementation Checklist: From Pilot to Production — overview

Its crawler is PerplexityBot, which it says respects robots.txt. A separate user agent, Perplexity-User, fetches pages when a user’s question requires it. Perplexity has faced public criticism, including from Cloudflare and publishers, over crawling behaviour and use of content, so many site owners have made explicit decisions about access. Make yours deliberately.

Phase 1: technical access checklist

Before working on content, confirm Perplexity can reach your pages:

  • Check robots.txt rules for PerplexityBot and decide whether to allow it.
  • Check firewall or CDN bot settings, since some block AI crawlers by default.
  • Make sure key content renders in HTML without needing heavy JavaScript.
  • Keep pages fast and free of interstitials that hide the main text.
  • Confirm your XML sitemap is current and referenced in robots.txt.
  • Keep canonical tags correct so the right version of each page is chosen.

Phase 2: content structure checklist

Answer engines quote passages, so the structure of each page matters. Review your priority pages against these points:

Perplexity Implementation Checklist: From Pilot to Production — in practice
  • The first paragraph directly answers the main question of the page.
  • Headings match real questions users ask.
  • Facts are specific: numbers with dates, named methods, clear steps.
  • Comparison pages include up-to-date tables.
  • Author names, credentials and update dates are visible.
  • Claims link to primary sources where possible.

None of this is unique to Perplexity. It also helps with Google, Bing and ChatGPT search, which is the point: you are improving pages, not gaming one engine.

How do you run a pilot?

Pick a small set of questions and pages, measure where you stand, change the pages and measure again. A workable pilot:

  • Write 20 to 30 questions customers ask before buying, drawn from sales calls, support tickets and Search Console.
  • Ask each in Perplexity and record which sources are cited, and if your site appears at all.
  • Choose five pages that should answer those questions and improve them using the checklist above.
  • Wait several weeks, then repeat the questions and record changes.

Answers vary between runs and users, so record results more than once and look at the pattern rather than single answers.

How do you track traffic from Perplexity?

Visits from Perplexity usually carry perplexity.ai as the referrer. In Google Analytics 4, add a custom channel group for AI assistants that includes perplexity.ai alongside chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and claude.ai. Build an exploration showing landing pages for that channel, so you see which pages earn AI referrals.

Look at engagement and conversions for this traffic too. AI referral visitors often arrive with a specific question already partly answered, and their behaviour can differ from search visitors.

Phase 3: using Perplexity inside your team

Many marketing teams use Perplexity for desk research: competitor overviews, market questions and source discovery. That is useful, with checks:

  • Open and read the cited sources before using any fact; citations can be misread or outdated.
  • Save the source links alongside notes, not just the summary.
  • Avoid entering confidential client information unless your plan’s terms cover it; Perplexity offers an Enterprise Pro tier with business data controls.
  • Use Spaces or shared threads to keep research organised by project.
  • Treat Deep Research reports as a starting point for analysts, not finished work.

Phase 4: moving to production

A pilot becomes normal practice when the question set is tracked monthly, page updates follow a regular calendar and research guidelines are written down. Assign an owner for each part: technical access, content updates, tracking and internal use. Without owners, the monthly check stops after two months.

How Alien Road applies Perplexity in GEO projects

In a typical engagement, discovery combines a technical audit of crawler access with a question set built from the client’s sales and support data. We record baseline citations in Perplexity and other AI assistants for each question.

Setup covers robots.txt and CDN settings agreed with the client, page improvements on priority topics, and an AI assistant channel group in GA4. For the client’s own team, we share short research guidelines on checking sources.

Measurement repeats the question set each month and tracks AI referral traffic and conversions by landing page. Reporting to the client shows citation changes per question and the pages behind them, with notes on competitors that gained or lost ground.

Which mistakes slow down a Perplexity rollout?

The most common one is chasing citations with thin new pages instead of improving the pages you already have. A second is blocking AI crawlers at the CDN level by accident, then wondering why visibility never improves. A third is judging progress from one search on one day; answers shift, so only repeated checks show a trend.

Inside teams, the frequent mistake is copying Perplexity’s summary into a deliverable without opening the sources. Make source checking part of the research guideline, and ask reviewers to spot-check links.

Where to start this week

Check your robots.txt and CDN bot settings for PerplexityBot today, and make a deliberate decision about access. Then write ten buying questions from your last month of sales and support conversations.

Ask each in Perplexity, note who is cited, and pick the page that should answer the question where you are absent. Rewrite its opening paragraph to answer that question directly, add a dated fact or two, and re-check in four weeks. Keep a simple log of each change and each re-check, so that after a quarter you can see which edits were followed by new citations and which made no difference.
