How does Yandex search work?

Ask AI about this page

Yandex Search runs the same three stages as any modern engine — discovery, indexing, ranking — but the failure modes differ enough that assuming Google behaviour will mislead you.

The three stages

  • Discovery: robots find URLs through links, sitemaps, IndexNow and the Yandex Metrica tag.
  • Indexing: pages are fetched, rendered, deduplicated into mirror and canonical groups, then stored.
  • Ranking: relevance, quality, regionality and behavioural signals decide order.

Where teams get confused

A page can be crawled and not indexed, indexed and not searchable, or searchable and invisible for a region it was never assigned to. Each has a different fix, and the console names which one applies.

So setzen wir das um

When a client says a page “is not ranking”, our first job is to find which stage it actually failed at. In Yandex the console tells you plainly, which makes this faster than the equivalent Google investigation.
