Imitation of user actions means artificially inflating a site’s search traffic to make it look popular and improve its ranking. Yandex classifies it as search spam because the sessions distort behavioural statistics and represent no genuine interest.
Why this violation matters more in Yandex
Behavioural signals carry substantially more weight in Yandex ranking than in Google’s, which is precisely why a market exists for faking them. The countermeasure is correspondingly firm: restrictions apply to the whole site or to sections of it, and they are lifted only once the algorithms confirm the behaviour has stopped and stayed stopped.
What qualifies
- Software or services that automatically imitate traffic from search engines.
- Deliberately recruiting real people to fake visits — assigning them a query to enter and a result to click. Using humans rather than bots does not change the classification.
- Providing the service to others, which makes the supplier as exposed as the buyer.
The contractor problem
Yandex’s prevention guidance is unusually direct about where the risk sits: make sure the site has no modules capable of simulating behaviour, and make sure that nobody involved in building or promoting the site is using dishonest methods. That second sentence is the real content of this page. The site owner carries the penalty for what an agency, a freelancer or a traffic vendor did on their behalf, and “we did not know what they were doing” does not shorten the recovery.
Due diligence that actually helps
- Ask any promotion supplier, in writing, what generates the traffic they report. A vendor selling guaranteed positions or guaranteed visit volumes is selling this.
- Watch analytics for the signature: sessions arriving from search with near-identical durations, no scroll depth, no secondary actions, clustered device and geography profiles.
- Audit third-party scripts. Modules capable of this can be installed as an ordinary plugin.
Recovery
Stop the source, remove any module involved, and submit for review with a description of what was stopped. Because the algorithms verify that it is not recurring, a single clean week is not the standard — the traffic pattern has to normalise and stay normal.
So setzen wir das um
We tell clients who ask about guaranteed-position services exactly this: what is being sold is almost always simulated behaviour, the penalty falls on the site rather than the vendor, and it is site-wide. The tell in analytics is boring and reliable — a block of sessions from search with identical durations and no second page view. If a report shows traffic rising while enquiries stay flat, that is the first thing we check.
