Yandex Webmaster will tell you when something about your site changes in search — but only for the topics you have switched on, and only through the channels you have configured. Left at defaults, the console is a place you have to remember to visit. Configured properly, it is the thing that tells you a violation was applied on the day it happened rather than the month the traffic report is written.
The weekly summary
The most useful single notification is the weekly digest, generated Monday to Sunday and sent by email only. The brief version covers site errors, pages gained and lost in search, changes in clicks by query and for the site overall, the pages with the most clicks and impressions, issues resolved, region assignment, changes to the important-pages list, and new reviews. If nothing meaningful changed, nothing is sent — silence is a signal, not a failure.
Topics worth switching on
- Site errors and recommendations — the output of the daily automated checks.
- Updating the primary site address — the robot has chosen a different URL as primary. On a site that did not just migrate, this needs investigating the same day.
- robots.txt modified — the file changed since the robot last read it. This one has caught more accidental deployments than any audit we have run.
- Site region changed — regional assignment moved, which in Yandex directly affects who sees the site.
- Subdomains appearing in search — staging and development subdomains announce themselves here.
- Delegated rights — somebody was granted access to the site.
- Search index update — the database refreshed and pages were reindexed.
Important pages: per-URL monitoring
A separate notification group watches a chosen list of pages and reports when the title changes, the last crawl date moves, the response code changes, the indexed version of the content changes, the search status changes (including exclusion as a low-demand page), the description meta tag changes, or the declared canonical address changes. For a commercially critical page — a pricing page, a category, a landing page behind an ad campaign — this is effectively change detection with the search engine’s own eyes.
Delivery channels
Notifications can arrive in the console interface, by email, in Telegram, and as push messages in Yandex Browser and the Yandex mobile app. Settings apply globally across every site on the account, or can be overridden per site; a topic left on the default inherits the general setting, and a topic set explicitly does not. Push and Telegram are available for some topics only.
The configuration mistake
Routing everything to one person’s inbox is convenient until that person is on holiday, and the categories most people mute first — errors and recommendations — are the ones with a deadline attached. Muting the weekly digest is defensible; muting violations is not.
So setzen wir das um
On every Yandex engagement we route the critical topics — violations, primary address changes, robots.txt modifications and region changes — to a shared address that both the client and our team can read, and leave the rest on the weekly digest. The specific notification that has justified this arrangement more than once is robots.txt modified: a deployment ships a staging file, nobody notices for three weeks, and the recovery costs more than the whole month of work.
