Removing Content from Google Search

The right method depends on whether you control the page, and how fast you need it gone.

Temporary removal tool, hours, lasts ~6 months

In Search Console, for URLs on a property you own. It hides the URL from results quickly but does not de-index it. Use it to buy time while you apply a permanent fix.

noindex, days to weeks, permanent

The correct permanent method for pages that must stay online. Remember Google has to be able to crawl the page to see the tag.

Delete the page, days to weeks, permanent

Return 404 or 410. 410 Gone is processed slightly faster because it removes ambiguity.

Access control, permanent

Put the content behind a login. Nothing to crawl, nothing to index.

Alien Road recommends: for anything urgent, leaked pricing, a wrong address, personal data, use the temporary removal tool first and then apply the permanent fix underneath. Teams often start with noindex alone and then wait anxiously for a recrawl that may take a fortnight.
