Google AI Mode is a search experience in Google that answers complex questions with a conversational response built by Gemini, along with links to the sources it used. It breaks a query into sub-questions, searches for each one and combines the results. For brands, this means visibility depends on being a cited source, not only on ranking in the classic list of results.

How is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?

AI Overviews appear at the top of normal results for some queries and give a short summary. AI Mode is a separate tab and a fuller experience. Users can ask follow-up questions, and the system uses what Google calls a query fan-out technique, issuing many related searches in the background before writing an answer.

Google AI Mode: How Alien Road Uses It in Client Campaigns — overview

The practical difference is depth. An AI Overview might name three options. AI Mode can compare them, explain trade-offs and recommend next steps over several turns. A brand that appears only for the head term may vanish once the user asks a more specific follow-up.

What signals help a page get cited in AI Mode?

Google has said that the same fundamentals behind classic search apply. Pages need to be indexable and eligible to show a snippet. There is no special markup that guarantees inclusion. What we observe is that cited pages answer a narrow question clearly and come from sites with a track record on the topic.

  • Indexable pages with no nosnippet or max-snippet:0 directives blocking previews
  • A direct answer within the first lines of each relevant section
  • Coverage of the follow-up questions a buyer would ask next
  • Consistent entity details: brand name, address, product names, prices
  • Structured data that matches visible content
  • Mentions and links from sites already trusted on the subject
How do we audit a client’s AI Mode visibility?

The audit starts with questions, not keywords. We gather queries from Search Console, sales call notes, chat logs and site search, then rewrite them as a buyer would type them into a conversational tool. A furniture retailer, for example, might get ‘what sofa fabric holds up best with two cats and a toddler’ rather than ‘durable sofa’.

Google AI Mode: How Alien Road Uses It in Client Campaigns — in practice

Each question is run in AI Mode from a clean browser profile in the client’s target country. We log whether the brand is named, which URLs are cited and which competitors appear. Follow-up questions are tested too, because fan-out often surfaces different sources in the second turn.

What the audit sheet records

  • The question and the date it was tested
  • Brand mentioned: yes or no, and in which part of the answer
  • Cited URLs from the client’s domain
  • Competitor domains cited
  • Gaps: subtopics the answer covers where the client has no content

How Alien Road applies Google AI Mode in campaigns

After the audit, we prioritize gaps by business value. Questions close to a purchase decision come first. For each one we decide whether to improve an existing page or create a focused new one. The writing brief asks for a direct answer up top, supporting detail below and clear headings that match how people phrase the follow-ups.

Technical setup runs in parallel: crawl checks, snippet directives, schema validation and internal links that tie related answers together. Off-site work targets the publications and review platforms that AI Mode already cites in the category. Reporting is monthly. We rerun the question panel, compare citation share with the previous month and pair that with Search Console data, where AI Mode clicks and impressions are counted within overall web search totals.

Can you measure AI Mode traffic directly?

Not separately, at the time of writing. Google reports AI Mode data inside the general Web search type in Search Console rather than as its own filter. Clicks from AI Mode reach your site like other Google organic traffic, so GA4 will not split them out either.

That is why the question panel matters. It is a sample, and answers vary between sessions, but tracking the same fifty questions month after month shows direction. Combine it with branded search trends and conversions from organic landing pages that were updated, and you have a reasonable picture.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Writing long introductions before the answer, which gives the model nothing quotable
  • Creating thin pages for every possible question instead of strong pages for clusters
  • Adding FAQ schema to content that is not visible on the page
  • Blocking snippets with nosnippet to protect content, which also blocks AI citations
  • Judging success by one screenshot instead of a repeated sample

What this means for paid campaigns

Google has started showing ads within AI Overviews and AI Mode in some markets. Broad match keywords and Performance Max campaigns are the main routes to those placements, because the queries are long and varied. Clients with strict exact match setups may simply not be eligible. We review match types and asset quality when a client wants presence in these surfaces.

Which content formats perform well in AI Mode?

Comparison pages, buying guides and clear how-to content tend to be useful sources, because they match how people ask multi-part questions. A page titled ‘linen vs velvet sofas for homes with pets’ with a short verdict, a comparison table and care instructions covers several fan-out queries at once.

Product and service pages benefit from the same thinking. List the facts a buyer needs, such as dimensions, delivery areas, warranty terms and price ranges, in plain HTML. When those facts are hidden in PDFs or images, the model is more likely to cite a marketplace or a review site instead of you.

  • Comparison pages with a stated recommendation and the reasons for it
  • Guides that answer the next three questions, not only the first
  • Local pages with accurate address, hours and service areas
  • Original data, photos or test results that other sites do not have
  • Author and company details that show who stands behind the advice
How long does it take to see changes?

Changes depend on recrawling and on how competitive the topic is. A page updated today may be recrawled within days on an active site, or weeks on a smaller one. Requesting indexing in Search Console after a significant update can help. We usually judge a round of changes after six to eight weeks, using the question panel and organic landing page data together.

Patience matters because answers fluctuate. One test may cite you and the next may not. Decisions should rest on the pattern across many questions over several months, not on a single result shared in a chat.

Where to start this week

Write down ten questions your customers ask right before they buy. Run each one in AI Mode and note which sites are cited. Then open your most important page for the top question and check whether the first two sentences answer it. If they do not, rewrite them today; that is the smallest change with the clearest effect.
