AI agents are software systems that take a goal from a user, then browse websites, compare options and sometimes complete tasks like booking or buying without the user visiting each page. For SEO, this means part of your audience is now a machine acting for a person, so pages must be easy to fetch, easy to parse and clear enough that an agent can quote or act on them correctly.

What exactly is an AI agent in this context?

A chatbot answers questions. An agent goes further: it plans steps, uses tools such as a web browser or search API, and acts. OpenAI’s ChatGPT agent mode, Google’s Project Mariner experiments, Perplexity’s shopping features and Anthropic’s computer use capability are public examples at the time of writing.

AI Agents and SEO: What Changes for Organic Visibility — overview

When a user asks an agent to “find a dentist in Beşiktaş open on Saturday and book the earliest slot”, the agent may search, open several clinic sites, read opening hours and try to use a booking form. The user may never see your homepage design. The agent sees your HTML, your structured data and your forms.

How does agent traffic differ from human search traffic?

Human visitors scan, scroll and judge by design and trust signals. Agents read text, follow links and try to extract facts. They are impatient with heavy scripts, cookie walls and content that loads only after interaction.

  • Agents may arrive through a search API, not through a classic results page click
  • They often fetch several competitors in one session and compare facts directly
  • They may not run JavaScript fully, depending on the tool
  • They read prices, hours, stock and policies literally, so outdated text costs you the comparison
  • Their visits may show up in logs under specific user agents, or look like a normal browser

That last point matters for analytics. Some agent visits will be invisible in your reports; others will appear as odd short sessions. Expect noise and look at server logs, not only Google Analytics.

AI Agents and SEO: What Changes for Organic Visibility — in practice
Which SEO basics matter more now?

The fundamentals did not change, but their weight did. Clean, server-rendered HTML, clear headings and accurate facts have always helped search engines. For agents, they decide if you make the comparison at all.

Crawl access

Check robots.txt for rules that block AI-related user agents such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot or Google-Extended. Blocking training crawlers is a business choice. Blocking the crawlers that power live search answers may remove you from agent results. Know which is which before you edit the file.

Structured data

Schema.org markup for Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, Offer, FAQPage and opening hours gives agents facts in a format they can trust. Keep it in sync with visible page content; mismatches can hurt you in both Google and agent answers.

Fact pages

Prices, delivery times, return windows and service areas should live on plain, linkable pages. An agent cannot compare your shipping policy if it is hidden in a PDF or a pop-up.

Will agents replace clicks?

Some, yes. When an agent answers a question or completes a task, the user may not visit any site. This is a continuation of the zero-click trend that started with featured snippets and AI Overviews.

But agents still need sources. Being the source an agent uses, quotes or buys from is the new form of visibility. Brands that measure only organic clicks will see a decline and may miss that their content is still doing work inside AI answers.

How should you measure visibility to agents?

There is no single dashboard yet. Use several signals together and track them monthly.

  • Server log hits from known AI user agents, by page
  • Referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com
  • Brand mentions in AI answers for a fixed list of prompts, checked by hand or with a monitoring tool
  • Branded search volume in Google Search Console, as a proxy for awareness created elsewhere
  • Conversions from forms and bookings that arrive with no prior visit history

None of these is perfect. Together they show a trend, which is what you need to justify work on content and structured data.

How Alien Road applies AI agents thinking to SEO

In a typical engagement, our team starts with a crawl and a log review. We check which AI crawlers reach the site, which pages they fetch and which they cannot render. We also run a set of real agent tasks, such as asking ChatGPT or Perplexity to compare the client with competitors, and record what the agent reads and gets wrong.

Setup work follows from those findings: fixing robots.txt rules that block useful crawlers, moving key facts out of scripts and images into HTML, adding or correcting structured data, and creating simple fact pages for pricing, service areas and policies.

We measure with the signals listed above and report them next to classic organic metrics. Clients see both the traffic they get from search and the presence they have inside AI answers, with notes on which pages drove each change.

What mistakes should you avoid?

The most common mistake is blocking every AI crawler in robots.txt out of caution, then wondering why the brand never appears in AI answers. The second is the opposite: allowing everything without reading the terms of each crawler.

  • Do not hide prices or key terms behind “contact us” if competitors publish them
  • Do not let structured data drift from the visible page
  • Do not create thin pages written only for agents; they need the same quality as pages for people
  • Do not ignore forms: a booking or quote form that fails without JavaScript blocks some agents
Do you need new files like llms.txt?

Some sites now publish an llms.txt file, a proposed plain-text guide that points language models to key pages. It is cheap to add, but no major search engine has committed to reading it at the time of writing. Treat it as an optional extra, not a replacement for clean HTML, sitemaps and structured data.

Where to start this week

Open your robots.txt and list every AI-related rule. Decide, crawler by crawler, which you want to allow. Then ask two AI assistants to compare your business with two competitors on price, location and service, and note every fact they get wrong. Fix the page that should have given them the right answer first.
