Baidu operates an original content protection programme with published operating rules, aimed at ensuring the producer of a piece rather than its fastest copier gets the search benefit.
What the programme is for
The problem it addresses is structural in Chinese search: content is republished at scale within hours, and without an origin signal the copy with the stronger domain can outrank the source. Original protection is the mechanism for declaring and defending authorship.
What qualifies as original
Content produced by the site itself, complete, and published first there. Baidu’s quality framework already grades truthful but collected content as merely medium quality — original protection is the positive counterpart to that judgement, and the two work together: originality raises the ceiling, collection lowers it.
What does not qualify
- Republished material, even with attribution — legitimate, but not original.
- Translations and machine translations.
- Assembled or stitched content, which Hurricane treats as an offence rather than merely non-original.
- Lightly reworded versions of somebody else’s work.
What protection actually gives you
A claim to be the source, which affects which version Baidu shows and how the copies are treated. It is not a takedown mechanism and not a copyright remedy — it is a search signal, and it depends on the site being trusted enough for the claim to carry weight.

Publishing consistently, submitting promptly so the original is seen first — which is where fast submission and API push matter commercially rather than merely technically — and keeping the produced content genuinely within the site’s field, since domain focus is a factor in how the site is judged overall.
The honest assessment
Original protection rewards publishers who produce regularly in a defined field and submit quickly. For a site publishing occasionally, or across scattered topics, the programme offers little — and Baidu’s wider framework will already be reading that pattern as low focus. The prerequisite is an editorial operation, not a configuration.
