Academic paper repositories can earn snippets showing the category, work type — summary, term paper, master’s thesis, report — publication date, download count, and an abstract or table of contents.

The deprecation to act on

Yandex no longer supports student paper snippets from an XML feed. Schema.org markup is the only route. Any site still maintaining a feed for this purpose is maintaining nothing.

The eligibility definition

Yandex defines the site type narrowly: a resource where students publish work produced as part of their studies, viewable and downloadable by other users for free. A paywalled repository does not qualify, which is a commercial fact rather than a technical one.

Page structure

One paper per page, as the main content — and a useful concession: the text of the paper does not have to be on the page. A description page with metadata and a download link is sufficient. That matters, because it means the snippet can be earned without publishing the full work.

The condition that makes or breaks it

Send values for all required fields, and the marked-up data must correspond to the page content shown when the link is clicked. Metadata describing a richer document than the visitor actually receives is the failure this rule exists to prevent — and, given the reservations attached, the risk of getting it wrong sits with the site.

The standard reservations

Yandex does not guarantee display, and reserves the right at its sole discretion to use the information or any part of it, in any of its services, separately or combined with other sources.

Why it is here

The pattern is what transfers: a content type with its own eligibility definition, a retired submission channel, and a requirement that markup match what the visitor actually sees. All three recur across Yandex’s partner programmes.

Comment nous l'appliquons

The retired XML feed is the kind of detail that keeps sites doing pointless work for years, and it is why we check the change log rather than assuming a documented integration is current. The correspondence rule — markup must match what the visitor gets — is the one worth generalising: metadata promising more than the page delivers is the most common way a partner programme is lost.
