Google AI Mode is a conversational search experience inside Google Search that answers complex questions by running many related searches at once and combining the results into one response with links. For a local or small business, the starting point is not a new tool. It is making sure Google already has accurate, detailed and consistent information about you to draw on.

How is AI Mode different from a normal search?

A classic local search returns a map pack and ten blue links. AI Mode accepts longer questions, such as “which bakery near Kadikoy does gluten-free birthday cakes and can deliver on Sunday”, and follow-up questions in the same thread. Google describes the technique behind it as “query fan-out”: the system breaks the question into sub-queries, searches for each, and writes an answer.

That matters for small businesses because the answer often names only a handful of options. Being one of them depends on whether Google can confirm the specific details the shopper asked about. A generic homepage that says “quality service since 2005” gives the system nothing to match.

What does AI Mode read about a local business?

Google has not published a full list of sources for AI Mode answers, so treat any precise claim with caution. What is visible in the answers, and consistent with how Google Search has long worked, is a mix of these inputs.

  • Your Google Business Profile: categories, services, hours, attributes, photos and posts.
  • Reviews on Google, especially the text, which often mentions specific products or situations.
  • Your website, particularly pages that describe individual services, prices and service areas.
  • Third-party listings and directories where your name, address and phone number appear.
  • Local news, blogs and forums that mention you.

None of this is new. The difference is that AI Mode can combine details from several of these sources in one answer, so gaps and contradictions become more costly.

Google AI Mode for Local and Small Businesses: Where to Start — in practice
What should a small business fix first?

Limited time means picking the actions with the widest effect. For most local businesses, the order below works.

1. Complete your Business Profile properly

Open your profile in Google Search or Google Maps and check every field. Choose the most precise primary category, add secondary categories that genuinely apply, and fill in the services or menu section item by item. Set special hours for holidays. Attributes such as wheelchair access, outdoor seating or online appointments are exactly the details conversational questions ask about.

2. Make your website answer specific questions

Create one page per main service rather than a single “services” list. Each page should say what the service is, who it is for, the area you cover, typical price ranges if you can share them, and how to book. A dentist with separate pages for implants, whitening and emergency appointments gives AI Mode far more to cite than one with a single paragraph.

3. Keep name, address and phone identical everywhere

Check the top directories in your country and sector. A mismatched old address or phone number creates doubt about which data is correct. Fixing these is tedious but it is free.

4. Ask for reviews that describe the experience

You cannot write reviews for customers, and you should never offer incentives for them, which breaks Google’s policies. You can, however, ask satisfied customers to mention what they bought or what problem you solved. A review saying “they fixed our boiler on a Sunday morning” helps answer a future question about weekend repairs.

Does structured data help with AI Mode?

Structured data does not guarantee inclusion, and Google has said there is no special markup required for its AI features. It does help Google understand your pages, which is useful for every search feature. Adding LocalBusiness markup (or a more specific type such as Restaurant or Dentist) with your address, opening hours and contact details is a reasonable, low-cost step.

Validate the markup with the Rich Results Test and make sure it matches what is visible on the page. Markup that contradicts the page content is worse than none.

How do you know if it is working?

Google Search Console reports AI Mode traffic together with regular web search data, at the time of writing, rather than as a separate line. So measurement relies on broader signals tracked over months.

  • Business Profile performance: calls, direction requests, website clicks and the search terms customers used.
  • Search Console queries: look for longer, question-style queries appearing for your service pages.
  • Manual checks: ask AI Mode the questions your customers ask, from a private browser window, and note whether you appear. Do this monthly with the same list of questions.
  • Lead sources: ask new customers how they found you and record the answer.

Manual checks are imperfect because answers vary by location and wording. Use them as a trend indicator, not a ranking.

How Alien Road applies Google AI Mode for local clients

In a typical engagement, Alien Road begins with a question inventory. The team collects the questions a local client’s customers actually ask, from phone call notes, contact forms, review text and Search Console queries, then runs a sample of them through AI Mode and regular search to see which businesses are mentioned and why.

The gap list that comes out of this shapes the work: missing Business Profile services, absent service pages, inconsistent directory listings or a lack of reviews on a key topic. Fixes are prioritised by how many questions each one addresses.

Reporting combines Business Profile metrics, Search Console query trends and the monthly question check, so the client sees whether visibility is improving across all three rather than relying on a single number.

Where to start this week

Write down ten questions a real customer asked you in the last month. Search each one in AI Mode and note who gets mentioned. Then open your Business Profile and fill in every service and attribute that relates to those questions.

If one question keeps naming competitors, write a dedicated page on your website that answers it clearly. Repeat the same ten searches next month and compare.
