Structured Data

Choosing the Right Structured Data Type

Google supports around thirty feature types. Most sites need a small number of them.

Nearly always worth it

  • Organization, name, logo, contact details, social profiles. Feeds knowledge panels.
  • BreadcrumbList, replaces the URL in results with a readable path.
  • LocalBusiness, address, hours, phone, for businesses with a location.
  • Article, for editorial content, with author and dates.

Worth it when applicable

  • Product, price, availability, reviews. Essential for shops.
  • FAQPage, note that Google now shows FAQ rich results only for well-known authoritative government and health sites.
  • VideoObject, Recipe, Event, JobPosting, Course.

Validate

Use the Rich Results Test for eligibility and the Schema Markup Validator for syntax. Search Console reports enhancement errors on live pages.

Alien Road recommends: start with Organization and BreadcrumbList on every site, then add what your content actually supports. These two are quick, apply site-wide, and improve how the listing reads. Chasing exotic types before the basics are in place is effort spent on the wrong end.
