Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries shown at the top of some search results, with links to the sources used. For B2B marketing teams they change early research queries the most: definitions, comparisons and how-to questions now often get an answer on the results page. The playbook is to become a cited source and to measure beyond clicks.

B2B buying involves long research phases and many stakeholders. If the first summary a buyer reads describes the category without mentioning you, you have lost a chance to shape the shortlist.

Which B2B queries trigger AI Overviews?

Google does not publish a list, and coverage changes over time. Observation across many accounts shows informational queries trigger them most often: “what is SOC 2 compliance”, “how to choose an ERP for manufacturing”, “CRM vs marketing automation”. Brand and navigational queries, and many queries with clear buying intent, trigger them less.

Google has also introduced AI Mode, a conversational search experience where users ask follow-up questions. It uses a similar approach, sending many related searches and assembling an answer with links.

  • Definitions and explainers of industry terms.
  • Comparisons between approaches or product categories.
  • Process questions: how to implement, migrate or evaluate.
  • Requirement questions: what a regulation or standard demands.
  • Cost and pricing model questions, often answered with ranges.
What happens to B2B traffic?

Clicks on informational queries tend to fall when an AI Overview answers the question directly. Several independent studies have reported lower click-through rates for top organic results when an overview appears, though figures vary by study and query type. Being cited inside the overview partly offsets this, as cited links receive clicks and, more importantly, brand exposure.

For B2B, the value of a visitor is high and volume is low. Losing some top-of-funnel clicks matters less than losing presence in the research phase. That shifts the goal from traffic to visibility and influence.

How do you become a cited source?

Google says AI Overviews draw on its normal ranking systems, so the usual SEO foundations apply. Pages already ranking well for a query are more likely to be cited. Beyond that, a few content patterns help.

Content patterns that get cited

  • A direct definition or answer in the first two sentences under a clear heading.
  • Original frameworks, checklists or criteria that other pages do not have.
  • Specific numbers with sources, such as regulatory deadlines or standard thresholds.
  • Comparison tables that separate options by clear criteria.
  • Named authors with relevant experience and visible update dates.

Technical foundations

  • Pages are indexable and not blocked from snippets with nosnippet or max-snippet limits.
  • Structured data is valid, especially Organization, Article and Product or SoftwareApplication.
  • Internal links connect explainers to product and solution pages.
  • Core Web Vitals are in the good range on mobile.

Note that the nosnippet directive keeps content out of AI Overviews as well. Some B2B teams added it years ago to protect gated content previews and forgot about it.

How should B2B teams measure AI Overview impact?

Search Console includes AI Overview and AI Mode traffic in its Performance report, but does not separate it at the time of writing. Teams work around this with a mix of methods.

  • Track a fixed set of priority queries manually or with a rank tracker that records AI Overview presence and citations.
  • Watch impressions versus clicks in Search Console; rising impressions with falling clicks often signal an overview.
  • Ask new leads how they first found you, and include AI tools as an option.
  • Monitor branded search volume as an indicator of research-phase influence.

How Alien Road applies this playbook for B2B clients

In a typical engagement, discovery builds a list of the research questions each buying role asks: the technical evaluator, the finance approver, the end user. Each query is checked for AI Overview presence and cited sources.

Setup prioritises queries where an overview appears and the client ranks on page one but is not cited. Those pages are restructured around direct answers, given clearer headings and supported with original material such as a checklist or a comparison. Measurement tracks citation presence for the query set every month alongside Search Console data, and reporting connects visibility changes to pipeline metrics from the CRM where the data allows.

What should B2B teams stop doing?

Long introductions before the answer, thin glossary pages written only for volume, and gating every useful asset behind a form all work against citations. A balance works better: keep the deep resources gated if needed, but publish a clear, useful summary that can be cited.

What changes for content planning?

Editorial calendars built around keyword volume alone need a second filter. For each planned piece, ask whether an AI Overview is likely to answer the query completely. If it is, the page must offer something the summary cannot: a tool, a template, a detailed comparison or first-hand experience from your team.

This pushes B2B content toward depth and away from short explainers that only restate common knowledge. It also favours formats that prospects save and share internally, such as evaluation checklists and requirement templates. Those assets earn citations, links and direct visits, which together carry more value than a few lost clicks on a definition query.

Aligning sales and marketing on the shift

Sales teams often notice the change before analytics do: prospects arrive with a clearer view of the category and sharper questions. Ask sales which sources prospects mention. If they quote a summary that describes your product inaccurately, that is a content task with a clear priority.

Share those findings in a short monthly note, so both teams work from the same picture of what buyers read before the first call.

Where to start this week

Export the top 50 informational queries from Search Console for your main product category. Search each one and record whether an AI Overview appears and who is cited.

Choose five queries where you rank on page one but are not cited. Rewrite the opening section of each page to answer the query in two sentences, then recheck in a month.
