Google Gemini is the name Google uses for its AI models and for the assistant that runs on them, and for marketers it now shows up in four places: the Gemini app, Google Workspace, Google Ads and Google Search. That spread is the main point. Gemini is less a single tool you adopt and more a layer that is already inside the products most marketing teams open every day.
Who makes Gemini and how is it offered?
Gemini is built by Google DeepMind. The models come in several sizes, with larger versions for complex reasoning and lighter, faster versions for high-volume tasks. Google has released new generations regularly, so the specific model names change; what stays constant is the way they are packaged.

- The Gemini app (web and mobile) for chat, research, image understanding and file analysis, with free and paid tiers.
- Gemini in Workspace, which adds writing, summarising and analysis to Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides and Meet for business accounts.
- Gemini in Google Cloud through Vertex AI and the Gemini API, for teams that build their own tools.
- Gemini inside Google’s ad and search products, which marketers use without ever opening a chat window.
What can marketers do with the Gemini app?
The app is the most flexible surface. You can upload a competitor’s brochure and ask for its main claims, paste a keyword list and ask for topic clusters, or attach a screenshot of a landing page and ask what a first-time visitor would misunderstand. It handles long documents well, which helps when you are reading research reports or long briefs.
Deep Research, where available, plans a multi-step web search and writes a report with sources. It is useful for a first pass on a new market or industry. Read the sources it cites, because a summary is only as good as the pages behind it, and some will be thin or outdated.
Gems let you save a custom assistant with fixed instructions, such as a brand voice checker or a meta description writer. A shared Gem means the whole team starts from the same rules.

How does Gemini work inside Google Ads and Search?
This is the part many marketers use without thinking of it as Gemini. In Google Ads, conversational campaign creation suggests headlines, descriptions and keywords from your website. Asset generation in Performance Max can create text and image variations. AI Max for Search campaigns expands matching and rewrites ad text based on the query and the landing page.
On the Search side, AI Overviews and AI Mode use Gemini models to answer queries directly on the results page. For marketers that changes the content brief: pages need clear, citable answers, structured data and real expertise, because the model picks sources it can quote confidently.
Where does Gemini fit in a marketing workflow?
A useful way to decide is to split tasks into reading, writing, analysing and deciding. Gemini helps a lot with the first three and very little with the last one.
- Reading: summarise briefs, research, call transcripts and reviews.
- Writing: first drafts of blogs, emails, ad copy and social posts, always edited.
- Analysing: Sheets formulas, pivot explanations, quick charts from exported data.
- Deciding: budgets, positioning, which campaign to cut. Keep these with people who own the outcome.
Teams that try to automate decisions early tend to lose trust in the tool when one bad suggestion goes live. Teams that start with reading and writing build confidence and then move into analysis.
A sample week with Gemini
Picture a small in-house team at a B2C brand. On Monday, a Meet call with the agency is summarised automatically, and the action list goes into a Doc. On Tuesday, the content lead drafts two blog outlines in Docs from last quarter’s top search queries exported to Sheets. On Wednesday, the paid lead reviews auto-generated headlines in Google Ads and removes three that overstate delivery times.
Thursday is for analysis: Gemini in Sheets groups returns data by reason code so the team can brief product. Friday’s report draft is written from the week’s notes and edited by the manager before it goes out. None of these steps is dramatic, and together they free several hours.
What are the known limits?
Like every large language model, Gemini can produce confident errors. It may invent statistics, misstate a product feature or cite a source that says something else. Fact-check anything that will be published or used in a client presentation.
Privacy depends on the account type. Business Workspace accounts have different data terms from personal accounts, and admins can control which features are switched on. Customer data, contracts and unreleased plans should only go into tools your company has approved.
Ad automation also has limits. Generated headlines may break brand rules or trademark policies, and broad matching can show ads on queries you would never choose. Review search terms and asset reports, and use brand exclusions and negative keywords where the platform allows them.
How Alien Road applies Google Gemini in marketing work
In a typical engagement we start by listing every Google product the client already pays for and which Gemini features are active in each. Many teams have Gemini in Workspace switched on but unused, and AI features in Google Ads switched on without anyone reviewing the output. Discovery closes both gaps.
Setup covers three tracks. For content, we build Gems or prompt Docs tied to the client’s style guide. For ads, we review auto-generated assets, add brand guidelines in the campaign settings where available and set a weekly search-term review. For search visibility, we restructure key pages so their answers are short, sourced and marked up.
We measure time saved per content asset, ad performance before and after AI features, and presence in AI Overviews for a tracked list of queries. Monthly reports show each number with a short explanation of what changed and what we recommend next.
Where to start this week
Open your Google Ads account and check which AI features are on: auto-generated assets, broad match, AI Max. Read the last 30 days of search terms and asset reports. Then pick one writing task in Workspace, such as the monthly report summary, and draft it with Gemini next time.
Those two steps show you where Gemini is already acting on your behalf and where it could save time. Both are more useful than reading another feature announcement.
