Facebook Ads targeting in 2026 works best with broad audiences guided by strong conversion data and clear creative, plus custom audiences for retargeting and exclusions. Meta’s Advantage+ audience uses your targeting as suggestions and expands beyond them when it predicts better results. Detailed interest targeting still has uses, but the creative and the conversion signal now do most of the targeting work.
Many advertisers still build tight interest stacks out of habit. In most accounts with good tracking, those narrow audiences cost more per result than broad ones. The skill has shifted from finding the right interests to feeding the system the right signals.

How does Facebook Ads targeting work now?
In Meta Ads Manager, targeting is set at the ad set level. For most objectives, Meta defaults to Advantage+ audience, where you can add audience suggestions such as age, gender, interests or custom audiences. The system uses these as a starting point and may show ads to people outside them.
You can switch to original audience options if you need firm limits, such as a strict age minimum or location. Even there, Meta may apply Advantage detailed targeting and Advantage lookalike to expand audiences when it expects better performance, depending on the objective.
- Locations, age minimums and languages can be set as firm controls.
- Interests and behaviours act mostly as suggestions.
- Custom audiences can be used as suggestions or as exclusions.
- Exclusions remain a firm control and matter more than ever.
Why does conversion data matter for targeting?
With broad targeting, Meta decides who sees your ad based on who has converted before and who resembles them. The quality of that conversion data shapes the audience. If the pixel records duplicate purchases or the wrong events, the system learns from bad examples.

- Install the Meta Pixel and the Conversions API, with deduplication by event ID.
- Check event match quality in Events Manager; send customer information parameters where allowed.
- Optimise for the event closest to revenue that you get enough of each week.
- Use value optimisation if order values vary widely.
For lead generation, import CRM data so Meta knows which leads became customers. Optimising toward qualified leads, through conversion leads optimisation for instant forms or offline events, usually reduces junk submissions.
Which audiences should you build?
Custom audiences are still the most valuable targeting assets you own. Build them in Ads Manager under Audiences.
Custom audiences worth having
- Website visitors in the last 30, 90 and 180 days.
- Product viewers and cart abandoners in the last 14 days.
- Purchasers in the last 180 days, for exclusion or upsell.
- Customer list uploads from your CRM or store, refreshed monthly.
- Video viewers who watched a meaningful share of your videos.
- People who engaged with your Facebook Page or Instagram account.
Lookalike audiences built from purchasers or high-value customers remain useful as suggestions within Advantage+ audience, though their advantage over broad targeting has narrowed in many accounts. Test them rather than assuming.
Is detailed interest targeting still worth using?
It still has a place. Interest targeting helps when your product serves a narrow audience and your account has little conversion history, so the system has few examples to learn from. It also helps when you need to test a message for a specific group, such as parents of young children or small business owners.
Keep interest audiences reasonably large. Stacking several narrow interests with AND logic creates tiny audiences that are expensive to reach and slow to learn. Meta has also removed many detailed targeting options over time, especially sensitive ones, so check what is still available before planning around it.
How should you test targeting?
Test one variable at a time with Meta’s A/B test tool in Experiments, or by running separate ad sets with the same creative and budget. Compare cost per result and conversion volume after enough data has accumulated, not after two days.
For example, an online furniture retailer could test three ad sets with identical creative: broad targeting within the country, Advantage+ audience with a purchaser lookalike as a suggestion, and an interest audience built around home decor. With a budget of, say, 50 dollars per day each for two weeks, the comparison shows which approach finds buyers at the lowest cost in that account. These figures are illustrative; set budgets so each ad set can reach several conversions per week.
- Keep creative identical across test cells.
- Run tests for at least a week, ideally two.
- Look at cost per purchase and purchase volume, not click-through rate.
- Check results in GA4 or your store backend as well as Ads Manager.
How does creative act as targeting?
With broad audiences, the creative decides who stops scrolling. An ad showing a product used by a retired couple attracts different people from an ad showing the same product used by students. Meta’s delivery system notices who engages and finds more of them.
This means creative variety is a targeting tool. Instead of five interest audiences with one ad, run one broad audience with five ads aimed at different buyer motivations: price, quality, convenience, gift-giving, a specific problem. Each ad pulls in the people it speaks to.
- Lead with the problem or situation a specific buyer recognises.
- Show people similar to the intended customer.
- Use different formats: short video, static image, carousel.
- Refresh ads before frequency climbs and results fall.
Which exclusions should every account use?
Exclusions keep budget away from people who should not see a given ad. Exclude recent purchasers from prospecting campaigns unless you sell consumables. Exclude existing customers from new customer offers. Exclude job seekers or employees if they inflate engagement on brand campaigns. In Advantage+ shopping campaigns, set the existing customer budget cap to control how much spend goes to people who already know you.
Placements and targeting
Placements interact with targeting. Advantage+ placements spread ads across Facebook Feed, Instagram Feed, Stories, Reels, Audience Network and Messenger. The audience is the same, but the people who engage in Reels may differ from those in Feed. Check the placement breakdown and, if one placement brings cheap clicks but no purchases, consider excluding it or adjusting creative for it.
Where to start this week
Open Events Manager and check event match quality for your main conversion. If it is low, work on sending more customer parameters through the Conversions API before changing any targeting.
Then set up one clean test: a broad ad set against your current best interest or lookalike ad set, with identical creative and equal budgets, for two weeks. The result will tell you how much of your targeting work the system can already do on its own.
