ChatGPT is a working tool in many agency campaigns, used for research summaries, first drafts, ad copy variations, data analysis and translation support. In our process, it speeds up the early and repetitive parts of the work, while strategy, fact-checking, final copy and client decisions stay with people. This article explains where it fits, step by step, and where we deliberately keep it out.
What is ChatGPT good at in campaign work?
ChatGPT, built by OpenAI, is a general assistant based on large language models. Business plans add features such as file uploads, data analysis, web search, custom GPTs, projects for shared context and admin controls over data use. It is strong at structuring messy information, generating many variations quickly and explaining data in plain language.

It is weaker at things clients care about most: current facts without browsing, exact figures, local market nuance and judgement about brand risk. Knowing both sides decides where it goes in a workflow.
How Alien Road applies ChatGPT across a campaign
The steps below follow a typical engagement, from first meeting to monthly report. Not every campaign uses every step.
Discovery and research
At the start, we collect the client’s materials: past campaign reports, product sheets, sales call notes, customer reviews. ChatGPT helps turn this pile into a first summary, such as recurring customer objections or the features buyers mention most in reviews. A strategist then checks the summary against the originals, because a confident summary can miss a quiet but important point.

For market research, we use ChatGPT search with sources visible and verify each claim by opening the cited page. Anything without a reliable source stays out of the strategy document.
Briefs and planning
Creative briefs follow a fixed template. ChatGPT drafts sections such as audience descriptions or message hierarchy from the research summary, and the account lead rewrites them. The value is speed: the team starts from a structured draft instead of a blank page.
Ad copy and variations
Search and social ads need many variations. For a Google Ads responsive search ad, we may ask for 30 headline options under 30 characters and 10 descriptions under 90, based on the brief and the landing page. A copywriter cuts the list down, fixes tone and checks every claim. Policy-sensitive sectors, such as health or finance, get an extra review against Google and Meta advertising policies.
Localisation support
For campaigns in several languages, ChatGPT gives a quick first pass. Native speakers then adapt the copy rather than simply correcting it, because a literal translation of a Turkish idiom into German rarely works in an ad.
Data analysis and reporting
With data analysis, we upload anonymised exports from Google Ads, Meta Ads Manager or GA4 and ask for trends, outliers and charts. The analyst checks formulas and totals against the platform, then writes the conclusions. ChatGPT may notice that cost per lead rose on weekends; the analyst decides if that matters and what to do about it.
What does ChatGPT never do in our process?
Some lines are fixed, and clients hear about them in the first meeting.
- It does not receive personal data such as customer lists, phone numbers or email addresses.
- It does not publish anything; every output passes a named person before it goes live.
- It does not invent statistics, testimonials or case results.
- It does not make final strategy or budget decisions.
- It does not replace the client’s approval on brand voice and claims.
We use business accounts with data controls, so prompts and files are not used for model training under the plan’s terms. Client confidentiality agreements apply to AI tools in the same way as to any other software.
How do we check quality?
Each output type has its own check.
- Research: every claim traced to a source page.
- Copy: character limits, brand terms, policy rules and factual claims reviewed by a copywriter.
- Analysis: totals reconciled with the original platform before any chart goes into a report.
- Translations: native speaker review, with a glossary of brand terms per language.
Prompt libraries and custom GPTs
Repeated tasks get saved prompts or custom GPTs set up with the client’s brand guide and tone rules. This keeps outputs consistent across team members and reduces the time spent explaining context again and again. The libraries are reviewed when brand guidelines change.
How do we measure whether it helps?
We track time per task before and after introducing a ChatGPT step, for example hours from brief to first ad set, and we compare campaign results to make sure faster work did not mean weaker work. If a step saves time but lowers quality, it is removed. Several early experiments, such as fully generated blog drafts for technical B2B topics, were dropped because editing took longer than writing.
What should clients ask any agency about AI use?
Clients have every right to know how AI touches their work. Useful questions include:
- Which tools do you use, and under which account type?
- Is our data used to train models?
- Who reviews AI-assisted outputs before they go live?
- How do you prevent invented facts in our content and ads?
- Can we opt out of AI use for specific materials?
Which ChatGPT features matter most for agency teams?
Projects keep files and instructions for one client together, so context does not need repeating in every chat. Data analysis handles spreadsheets and charts. Web search with visible sources speeds up desk research, as long as someone opens the links. Workspace admin controls let a team lead manage members and data settings. Features like these change the daily routine more than any single model upgrade.
Where to start this week
If you are planning your own use of ChatGPT in marketing, pick one repetitive task, such as writing ad variations or summarising monthly reports, and document how long it takes today. Write a reusable prompt for it, add a review checklist, and measure the time and quality for a month.
Before scaling, write down the lines you will not cross with data and publishing. Those rules matter more than any prompt, and they are what keep fast work trustworthy.
