An SEO strategy is the difference between doing SEO tasks and getting SEO results. Many sites have a list of activities, such as fixing technical errors, publishing posts and building links, but no plan that connects those activities to revenue. Without that connection, work is chosen because it is easy or fashionable, reports show rising numbers that do not matter, and the budget is the first thing cut when times get hard. A strategy starts from the business and works backwards to the tasks.

1. Start with the business model

Write down which products or services matter most, what a customer is worth, how long the sales cycle is and which markets and languages you serve. These answers decide everything else. A software company with a long B2B cycle needs content that supports research and comparison; a local clinic needs visibility for urgent, location-specific searches; an ecommerce store needs category and product pages that match purchase intent. The same tactics in all three cases would be wrong in at least two of them.

2. Map keywords to intent and to pages

Keyword research is not a list of high-volume terms. It is a map of the questions and needs your customers have at each stage, grouped by intent, with one page responsible for each group. Informational searches belong to guides, commercial investigation to comparisons and service pages, transactional searches to product and pricing pages. Mapping each group to a single page prevents two of your own pages from competing for the same search, which is one of the most common and least visible problems on growing sites.

3. Fix the foundations that block everything else

  • Crawling and indexing: important pages reachable, unimportant ones excluded, sitemaps accurate.
  • Site architecture: logical categories and internal links that pass authority to priority pages.
  • Performance and mobile usability: fast, stable pages on real devices.
  • Structured data where it qualifies pages for richer results.
  • International setup with hreflang if you serve several languages.

Technical work has a ceiling: once search engines can crawl, understand and render the site well, further technical polish rarely moves rankings. Prioritise issues by how many important pages they affect.

4. Build content around topics, not single keywords

Search engines evaluate whether a site covers a subject thoroughly and credibly. Plan clusters: a central page that covers a topic broadly and supporting pages that answer specific questions in depth, all linked together. Write from real expertise, include original information such as data, examples and process detail, and keep important pages updated rather than publishing endlessly new ones.

5. Earn authority deliberately

Links and mentions from relevant, trusted sites still signal credibility. The sustainable way to earn them is to create things worth citing, such as research, tools and genuinely useful resources, and to promote them to people who write about your field. Digital PR, partnerships and expert commentary tend to produce better links than outreach that asks for a link without offering anything.

6. Plan for AI search

AI assistants and AI overviews increasingly answer questions directly. Content that is clearly structured, factually precise and attributable to a recognised brand is more likely to be cited. The same fundamentals apply, with extra weight on clear answers, consistent entity information and being mentioned by other reputable sources.

7. Measure what the business cares about

Track rankings and traffic for the page groups in your map, but report on outcomes: leads, sales and revenue from organic search, and the share of priority topics where you appear on the first page. Review the strategy quarterly, because competitors, search features and your own business priorities change.

A strategy turns SEO from a list of chores into an investment with a clear return. Our SEO team builds these plans with clients and then executes them, starting with the work that moves revenue first.
