Sites publishing computer programs, applications and games can earn snippets showing the description, category, price, size, download count and operating system — the facts a user decides on before clicking.

The requirement

Schema.org markup, and one software product per page. A page listing several applications produces nothing.

What makes this snippet worth the effort

Software search is comparison shopping. Price, platform and size answer the visitor’s question before the visit, which sounds like lost traffic and is not: the visits you lose are the ones that would have bounced on discovering the wrong platform, and the visits you keep are qualified. A snippet reading “Free” against competitors showing nothing is a decisive advantage on exactly the queries that matter.

The technical details that decide the outcome

Recalling the field rules: at least two optional properties beyond the required description, or no structured snippet is generated at all; a bare fileSize number means kilobytes; operating systems use commas between versions and a vertical bar between systems; applicationSubCategory is truncated at 24 characters; and price of 0 renders as “Free”.

The reservations, which bite harder here

Yandex does not guarantee display, may use the data wholly or partly in any service, and is not responsible for the accuracy of information in the snippet. For software that means a stale version number, an old file size or an outdated price is published under your name to people who never reach the page. Download-count claims deserve particular care: a figure nobody updates becomes a false statement over time.

Even if the ordinary snippet wins

Yandex may decide the regular snippet is more informative and use that instead. Marking up correctly does not guarantee the enhanced version — it makes it available.
