Informers are small widgets Yandex offers for embedding on a site: a Metrica traffic informer showing the day’s visits, and a clock and weather widget for a chosen city.
The traffic informer
Two display types. Simple — clicking it opens Yandex Metrica. Advanced — clicking it shows a widget with a week of site statistics. Both draw on the Metrica tag already installed for analytics, so no additional measurement is involved.
What they are for
Putting a single number in front of somebody who will not log into a console — a manager, a client, a team dashboard on a wall. That is a genuine use, and it is the only one.
What they are not for
Analysis. A visit count without its context invites the wrong conclusion: traffic falling with no explanation attached produces alarm rather than action, and traffic rising conceals the question of where it came from — a campaign, a seasonal peak, or a single referring article. Every decision worth making needs the report behind the number, and the informer is specifically the number without the report.
Two considerations before embedding one
- Third-party script weight. A widget in a template loads on every page. Page speed is something Yandex measures, logs as an error above three seconds, and connects to indexing. Trading measurable performance for a decorative counter is a poor exchange.
- What it publishes. A public traffic informer discloses visit numbers to anyone who looks, competitors included. For some sites that is a deliberate signal of popularity; for most it is an unexamined default.
The alternative we prefer
A short written note with the numbers that matter and an explanation of what moved them. It takes longer to produce and it is the only format that has ever changed a decision. Widgets are convenient; interpretation is what the reader actually needs.
How we apply this
We rarely deploy informers. A number without its context invites the wrong conclusion, and the clock-and-weather widget in particular is third-party script weight on every page in exchange for nothing measurable. When a client wants visibility without a console login, a short monthly note serves them better and does not publish their traffic to their competitors.
