Google AI Overviews are generated summaries that appear at the top of some Google results, combining information from several web pages with links to sources. In client campaigns, we treat them as a visibility channel of their own: we find which client queries trigger them, restructure pages so they are easier to cite, strengthen third-party mentions and report citation share alongside classic rankings and traffic.
What are Google AI Overviews?
AI Overviews grew out of Google’s Search Generative Experience experiment and rolled out widely from 2024. They use a Gemini model customised for Search, which reads results from Google’s index and writes a short answer with linked sources shown in the panel or inline. They appear mainly for informational and complex queries; many simple navigational or transactional searches show none.

Google has said that sites do not need special markup to appear and that standard SEO practices apply: the page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. Site owners can limit snippet use with controls such as nosnippet, though that also affects regular results. Clicks and impressions from AI Overviews are included in the normal Search Console Performance report.
Why do AI Overviews matter for clients?
For many informational queries, the overview answers the question before the user scrolls. That can reduce clicks to the classic top results, even when rankings stay the same. On the other hand, being cited in the overview places a brand at the top of the page, sometimes above the first organic result.
The effect varies by sector. A clinic answering “how long does hair transplant recovery take” faces a very different picture from an e-commerce store selling “linen bedding king size”, where shopping results dominate. That is why we start each campaign by measuring, not assuming.

How Alien Road applies Google AI Overviews in a campaign
The process below reflects a typical engagement in our GEO and SEO work. The steps are the same; the queries, pages and markets change per client.
Step 1: query discovery
We export the client’s Search Console queries for the last 12 months and add target queries from keyword research and sales conversations. Then we check, in a clean browser and in the relevant country, which of them trigger an AI Overview and which domains are cited. Monitoring tools that track overview presence help at scale, but we always spot-check by hand.
The output is a sheet with three groups: queries where the client is cited, queries where competitors are cited, and queries with no overview at all.
Step 2: page diagnosis
For queries where competitors are cited, we compare the cited page with the client’s equivalent. Common gaps include:
- the answer is buried under a long introduction;
- headings do not match the question people ask;
- the page lacks specifics, such as steps, timelines or conditions;
- there is no visible author, reviewer or date;
- the page is slow, or key content loads only through scripts.
Step 3: restructuring content
We rewrite the opening so the main question is answered in the first two or three sentences. Sections follow the likely follow-up questions, with lists for steps and comparisons. Claims link to sources, and expert review is shown for health, finance and legal topics. We do not add filler FAQs or invented statistics to look more quotable.
Step 4: technical checks
Pages must be indexable, fast and server-rendered where possible. We confirm structured data such as Organization, Article, Product or FAQPage is accurate, check canonical tags and fix internal links so the improved page receives authority from related content.
Step 5: mentions beyond the site
Overviews draw on several sources, and some of them are about the client rather than by the client. We look at which third-party sites appear for the client’s topics, such as industry directories, comparison articles, review platforms and forums, and plan where an accurate mention or contribution makes sense.
How do we report on AI Overviews?
Reporting combines four views, so nobody reads one number out of context.
- Overview presence: the share of tracked queries that show an AI Overview.
- Citation share: the share of those overviews that cite the client.
- Search Console clicks and impressions for the tracked pages, with click-through rate trends.
- Conversions from organic traffic to those pages, from GA4 and the CRM.
Explaining falling clicks
When click-through drops while impressions hold, the report says so plainly and checks whether conversions held as well. A page cited in an overview may get fewer but better-informed visits. We discuss that trade-off with the client instead of hiding it.
What do we avoid?
- Promising inclusion in AI Overviews, which no one controls.
- Mass-producing pages for every phrasing of a question.
- Blocking snippets broadly to “protect” content, which also removes the page from rich results.
- Changing many pages at once without notes, which makes results impossible to attribute.
What can a business check on its own?
Even without an agency, a business can run a basic review in an afternoon.
- Search your ten most important questions from a clean browser in your target country.
- Note which ones show an overview and who is cited.
- Open the cited pages and compare the first paragraph with yours.
- Check that your page shows an author, a date and sources for key claims.
- Confirm in Search Console that the page is indexed and has no snippet restrictions.
How long before changes show up?
Google needs to recrawl and reprocess a page before an overview can reflect it. For frequently crawled sites that can take days; for smaller sites, several weeks. That is why we log every change with a date and wait at least a month before judging, instead of editing the same page again and again.
Where to start this week
Take the 20 queries that bring the most impressions to your site in Search Console and check them manually for AI Overviews. Mark which ones cite you, which cite competitors and which have none.
Choose two pages where a competitor is cited instead of you, rewrite the openings to answer the question directly, add sources and a visible review date, and log the change. Check again in four to six weeks before moving to the next pair.
