Perplexity is an AI answer engine that searches the web in real time and replies with a written answer and numbered source citations. For e-commerce brands it serves two purposes: a fast research tool for the team, and a channel where shoppers ask for product recommendations. Getting cited depends on clear product pages, trusted reviews and pages its crawler can read.
How do shoppers use Perplexity?
Shoppers ask Perplexity the questions they used to split across several Google searches: ‘best running shoes for flat feet under a certain budget’, ‘which espresso machine is easiest to clean’, ‘is this brand of mattress worth it’. The answer pulls from review sites, forums, brand pages and publications, and lists sources the user can click.

Perplexity has also added shopping features in some markets, with product cards, prices and buying options inside the answer. The details and availability vary by country and change over time, so check what users in your target market actually see.
Use case 1: Market and competitor research
For the marketing team, Perplexity speeds up research that needs current sources. Ask which brands dominate a category in a specific country, what common complaints appear in reviews or which publications rank products in your niche. The citations let you verify every claim, which is the main advantage over assistants that answer from memory.
- List competitors mentioned for your top category questions
- Summarize common complaints about competitor products from reviews and forums
- Find publications and blogs that publish product roundups in your niche
- Check how your brand is described when shoppers ask about it directly
- Track new product launches in the category
Use case 2: Finding your visibility gaps
Run the questions your customers ask before buying and record the results. Is your brand named? Which of your pages, if any, are cited? Which sources does Perplexity rely on for the category? Often the answer is a handful of review sites and one or two Reddit threads, which tells you where to focus outreach.

Repeat the test monthly with the same questions. Answers change between runs, so one test is anecdotal. Twenty questions over six months give a trend you can act on.
Use case 3: Making product pages citable
Perplexity’s crawler, PerplexityBot, needs access to your pages. Check robots.txt and any bot protection in Cloudflare or your hosting provider, which sometimes blocks AI crawlers by default. A blocked crawler means your own pages cannot be cited, even if third-party sites mention you.
- Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt if you want to be cited
- State key specs in HTML text: size, materials, compatibility, warranty
- Answer common questions on the page, near the top of each section
- Keep prices and stock status current; stale data gets repeated
- Use Product schema with price, availability and review data where valid
- Write comparison pages that honestly cover your product against alternatives
Use case 4: Earning third-party mentions
Perplexity often cites independent sources more than brand sites for recommendation questions. A mention in a respected roundup, a detailed review from a niche blogger or a helpful Reddit discussion can matter more than any change on your own site. This is digital PR with a clear target list: the sources Perplexity already cites.
Approach it honestly. Send samples to reviewers who test products, provide accurate data to publications that update roundups and take part in community discussions as a clearly identified brand representative. Astroturfing forums tends to backfire, and platforms remove it.
Use case 5: Measuring Perplexity traffic
Clicks from Perplexity usually arrive with perplexity.ai as the referrer. In Google Analytics 4, go to Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, and filter session source for perplexity. Build a custom channel group for AI assistants that includes Perplexity, ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot so the total is visible.
Traffic volumes may look small compared with Google, but visitors who click through from a research answer are often further along in their decision. Compare conversion rate and average order value for this segment with organic search before judging its value.
Does Perplexity offer advertising?
Perplexity has tested sponsored follow-up questions and brand placements with selected advertisers. At the time of writing it is not a self-serve ad channel comparable to Google or Meta, and availability is limited. For most e-commerce brands, organic visibility is the realistic focus.
How Alien Road applies Perplexity for e-commerce clients
In a typical engagement we build a question panel from the client’s site search, customer service logs and Search Console data, then run it in Perplexity, ChatGPT search and Google AI Mode. The output maps which competitors and sources dominate each question. Technical checks cover crawler access, schema and how product facts are presented in HTML.
Work then splits into on-site and off-site tracks. On-site, we rewrite priority product and category pages so key facts and answers are easy to quote. Off-site, our PR team targets the reviewers and publications that the panel shows are cited most. Monthly reporting tracks citation share across the panel, AI referral traffic in GA4 and conversions from that segment.
How should category pages be written for answer engines?
Category pages are often a grid of products with one line of text. For AI answers, a short buying guide above or below the grid helps: what to look for, which option suits which need and how your range covers it. A page for trail running shoes might explain grip, drop and waterproofing in three short paragraphs, then link to matching products.
Keep it honest and specific. Answer engines tend to favor content that reads like advice rather than promotion. Mention trade-offs, such as heavier shoes offering more protection, and name the products in your range that fit each case.
- Two to four short paragraphs of buying guidance
- A small comparison table for key attributes
- Links to the products that match each recommendation
- Updated whenever the range changes
Where to start this week
Check your robots.txt and firewall settings for PerplexityBot. Then ask Perplexity five questions a buyer in your category would ask, and write down every cited source. Pick the two sources that appear most often and find out how products get included there. That list is your first outreach plan.
