Ranking Systems and Updates

Core Updates and How to Respond

Core updates are broad changes to ranking systems, released several times a year and taking one to two weeks to roll out. They are not penalties. A site can lose visibility without doing anything wrong, the assessment of what best answers a query changed.

What Google says to do

There is no fix for a core update, because nothing is broken. Google directs site owners back to the helpful-content self-assessment questions and advises a focus on overall content quality rather than technical tweaks.

A workable response

  • Wait for the rollout to complete before analysing anything.
  • Compare like with like, the same period a year earlier, not the week before.
  • Identify which pages and queries lost, not just the site total.
  • Read the losing pages against the self-assessment questions, honestly.
  • Improve or consolidate. Thin pages that exist to catch a query are usually where the loss concentrates.

Timing

Recovery typically requires a subsequent core update to see improvement, which means months, not weeks.

Alien Road recommends: resist making a dozen changes at once during a rollout. It feels productive and it destroys your ability to learn anything from the outcome. We wait for the rollout to finish, analyse at page level, then change one class of thing at a time.
