Removing Outdated Content You Do Not Control

The Remove Outdated Content tool works on pages you do not own. It does not delete anything from the web; it asks Google to refresh its record when the live page no longer matches what is shown.

It works when

  • The page now returns 404 or 410 but still appears in results.
  • The page still exists but the specific content you are concerned about has been removed.
  • A snippet or cached copy shows text that is no longer on the page.

It does not work when

The content is still live. In that case the only route is contacting the site owner, or, for personal information, a legal removal request under the relevant policy.

Alien Road recommends: capture evidence before you file: a screenshot of the current live page and of the stale result. Requests are rejected when the live page still contains the text, and having the comparison ready saves a rejected request and another two weeks.
