Perplexity is useful to B2B marketing teams in two ways: as a research tool that answers questions with cited sources, and as an answer engine where buyers research vendors. A good playbook covers both. Use it to speed up market and competitor research while checking every source, and make your own content easy for it to find, read and cite, because B2B buyers increasingly ask AI tools for shortlists before they visit any vendor website.

What is Perplexity?

Perplexity is an AI-powered answer engine. Users ask questions in plain language and get a written answer with numbered citations linking to the web pages it used. It offers free and paid tiers, a Pro Search mode that runs more searches per question, a Research mode for longer reports, Spaces for organising work, and a browser called Comet. It can use several underlying models from different providers.

Its value for research is the citations. Unlike a chatbot answering from memory, Perplexity shows where each claim came from, so you can check it. That does not make every answer correct; sources can be weak or misread.

How should a B2B team use Perplexity for research?

Treat Perplexity as a fast first pass that points you to sources, not as the source itself. These workflows tend to save the most time.

  • Market scans: ask about trends, regulations or buyer problems in your sector and collect the cited reports and articles.
  • Competitor snapshots: ask what a competitor offers, who it targets and how it prices, then open each cited page.
  • Account research: before a sales call, ask about a target company’s recent news, hires and announcements.
  • Content research: ask what questions people have about a topic and which sources answer them well.
  • Fact checking: test claims in your own drafts and see what sources support or contradict them.

Use Spaces to keep research for each client, product line or campaign together, with custom instructions such as “prefer primary sources, flag anything older than two years”.

Check the sources every time

Open the citations before using any claim. Look for primary sources such as official documents, company pages and research reports, rather than blog summaries of them. If a number appears without a clear original source, leave it out. This step keeps your sales decks and articles from repeating someone else’s mistake.

How do buyers use Perplexity, and why does it matter?

B2B buyers use AI answer engines to build shortlists: “best CRM for a 50-person manufacturing company”, “alternatives to vendor X”, “how does vendor Y price”. The answer lists a few names with reasons and sources. If your company is not mentioned, or is described with outdated information, you lose a place on the list before any sales contact.

This makes visibility in Perplexity part of generative engine optimisation, sometimes called GEO or AEO. It overlaps with SEO but focuses on being cited in AI answers.

How do you earn citations in Perplexity answers?

Perplexity cites pages it can find through search and read clearly. There is no paid placement in organic answers, and Perplexity has not published a ranking formula. These practices make citation more likely.

  • Answer specific buyer questions directly on your site, with the answer in the first paragraph under a clear heading.
  • Publish clear pages for pricing approach, integrations, use cases by industry and comparisons, written factually.
  • Keep facts consistent across your site, LinkedIn, review sites such as G2 and Capterra, and directory listings.
  • Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt if you want to be cited; blocking it removes you from its index.
  • Earn mentions in industry publications, analyst notes and partner sites, which Perplexity often cites.
  • Update pages with dates and current details; answer engines favour fresh information for many queries.

Comparison pages deserve honesty. A page that fairly explains where your product fits and where a competitor may suit better reads as more credible, and is more likely to be quoted, than one that attacks rivals.

How do you monitor your visibility?

Build a list of twenty to fifty questions buyers in your category ask. Run them in Perplexity each month, in a logged-out or neutral session, and record whether your brand appears, which pages are cited, and how you are described. Note competitors that appear too.

Several tools now track AI answer visibility across Perplexity, ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. They can save time, but a manual sample is a good start and helps you understand what the tools report. In GA4, look for referral traffic from perplexity.ai and track what those visitors do.

What are the limits?

Answers change between runs and between users, so one result is not a ranking. Citations can include outdated or low-quality pages. Perplexity has also faced publisher disputes over how it uses content; follow developments if your business publishes original journalism or research. For confidential research, check the data settings and enterprise terms before entering client information.

How Alien Road applies Perplexity

In a typical engagement Alien Road uses Perplexity in two tracks. In research, our strategists use it for market scans and competitor snapshots during discovery, always opening and recording the original sources in a shared research document.

In visibility work, we build the client’s question set with their sales team, run monthly checks in Perplexity and other answer engines, and record mentions, citations and descriptions. The gaps feed a content plan: missing comparison pages, unclear pricing explanations, outdated facts on review sites. Reports show question-level changes over time alongside referral traffic and leads from AI sources.

Where to start this week

Write down ten questions a buyer would ask before choosing a provider like you. Ask each one in Perplexity and note whether you appear and which sources are cited. Pick the question where a competitor is cited and you are not, read the page Perplexity used, and write a clearer, more current page on your own site that answers it. Check again in a month to see whether the citation has changed, and repeat with the next question on your list.
