ChatGPT search lets ChatGPT answer questions with current information from the web, showing linked sources alongside its answer. For marketers it is a new discovery channel: brands can be cited, linked and recommended in conversational answers. It fits next to Google search work, not instead of it, and rewards clear, crawlable, well-sourced content.
OpenAI added search to ChatGPT so the assistant can look up recent information instead of relying only on training data. ChatGPT decides when to search based on the question, or users can trigger it themselves. Answers include citations and a sources panel, and shopping-style queries can show product results. Features are evolving quickly, so treat any specific behaviour described here as accurate at the time of writing.

How does ChatGPT search find and choose sources?
OpenAI runs a crawler called OAI-SearchBot that collects pages for search results in ChatGPT. It is separate from GPTBot, which OpenAI uses for training data, and from ChatGPT-User, which fetches pages when a user’s request triggers it. Site owners can control each one separately in robots.txt.
That separation is useful. A publisher can block GPTBot from training while still allowing OAI-SearchBot so its pages can appear and be cited in answers. OpenAI has also partnered with search and data providers, so visibility can depend partly on how well a page is indexed elsewhere on the web.
What should marketers check first?
- Robots.txt: confirm OAI-SearchBot is not blocked, and decide your policy on GPTBot separately.
- CDN and firewall rules: some bot protection settings block AI crawlers by default.
- Indexability: pages should be indexable in major search engines and render core content without heavy JavaScript.
- Server logs: look for OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User requests to confirm access.
- Bing Webmaster Tools: worth setting up, since Bing data has historically supported ChatGPT’s search features.
How do you track traffic from ChatGPT?
Links clicked in ChatGPT answers often carry a utm_source=chatgpt.com parameter, which shows up in analytics as a referral source. In Google Analytics 4, create an exploration or a custom channel group that captures chatgpt.com, along with other AI assistants such as Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot, so AI referrals are visible as their own channel.

Traffic is only part of the picture. Many answers satisfy the user without a click, so citation and mention tracking matters as well. Record which page was cited, not only whether the brand appeared, because that shows which content is doing the work. Some SEO tools now monitor brand mentions in AI answers; manual checks of a fixed question set each month also work for smaller teams.
What kind of content gets cited?
Pages that answer a question directly and specifically tend to be easier to cite. That means a clear answer near the top, headings that match real questions, facts with sources, and up-to-date information with visible dates. Original data, such as a survey or a price index you maintain, gives the model something it cannot get elsewhere.
- Lead each section with a direct answer, then add detail.
- Use descriptive headings phrased the way people ask.
- Keep product, pricing and location details current and consistent across the web.
- Add structured data where it applies: Organization, Product, FAQ, LocalBusiness.
- Earn mentions on reputable third-party sites, since answers draw on many sources, not only yours.
Where does ChatGPT search fit in a marketing plan?
Think of it as a layer on top of existing search and content work. The fundamentals overlap heavily with good SEO: crawlability, clarity, authority and freshness. The differences are in measurement and in format. Conversational answers reward pages that explain and compare, so comparison guides, how-to content and clear product information are especially valuable.
It also changes how brand reputation travels. If reviews, forum threads and news coverage describe your brand in a certain way, answers will tend to echo that. PR, reviews and community presence feed this channel as much as on-site content does.
What are the limits and risks?
Answers can be wrong, outdated or attribute claims to the wrong source. A brand can be described inaccurately with little recourse beyond fixing the sources the answer relied on. Click-through rates from AI answers vary and are hard to forecast. And because the product changes often, a tactic that works one quarter may not work the next. Avoid tricks aimed at manipulating AI answers; stable visibility comes from content that deserves citation.
How is it different from Google AI Overviews?
Both produce generated answers with links, but the settings differ. AI Overviews appear inside Google results, draw on Google’s index and are controlled through ordinary Google search eligibility. ChatGPT search lives inside a conversation, where follow-up questions narrow the answer and the user may never see a results page. In practice, a page that is clear, current and well linked tends to do reasonably in both. The bigger difference is reporting: Google Search Console groups AI Overview data with normal web search, while ChatGPT traffic only appears through referral tracking and your own checks.
How Alien Road applies ChatGPT search in GEO work
In a typical engagement, discovery starts with a technical check of crawler access in robots.txt, CDN settings and server logs, plus a set of priority questions the client’s buyers ask. We run those questions in ChatGPT and other assistants to record which brands and pages are cited today.
Setup covers fixing access, adding an AI referral channel in GA4, and improving or creating pages that answer the priority questions directly with sources. Off-site work focuses on accurate listings, reviews and mentions on sites that answers commonly cite.
Measurement repeats the question set monthly and reports citations, brand mentions and AI referral traffic, with notes on what changed. The aim is a clear trend, not a promise of placement in any specific answer.
Where to start this week
Open your robots.txt and check the rules for OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot, then search your server logs for both. Next, set up an AI referral segment in GA4 that includes chatgpt.com. Finally, write down ten questions your customers ask and run them in ChatGPT to see who gets cited. You now have a baseline.
