Yandex uses several terms differently from the way they are used in English-language SEO, and a few have no Google equivalent at all. The glossary is worth reading once.
Terms that cause confusion
- Mirrors — grouped site addresses, with one designated primary; Google handles this as canonicalisation and does not expose it.
- Sitelinks — generated automatically, but viewable and partially editable in the console.
- Regionality — an explicit site attribute, not an inference from content or hosting.
Why the vocabulary matters
Half the confusion in Yandex work comes from assuming a familiar word means the familiar thing. Mirrors in particular behave nothing like canonical tags.
So setzen wir das um
We go through this vocabulary with a client’s in-house team at the start of a Yandex engagement. It takes twenty minutes and it prevents the recurring conversation where both sides use the word “duplicate” to mean two different mechanisms.
