Google AI Max for Search campaigns is a feature set that adds broad query matching, automatically generated ad text and final URL expansion to standard Search campaigns. Implementing it well means preparing conversion tracking, brand and URL controls and a clear pilot design before you switch it on. This checklist walks through each stage, from a single test campaign to production across an account.

What is AI Max for Search?

Google announced AI Max for Search in 2025 as a one-click option inside existing Search campaigns. It is not a new campaign type like Performance Max. Instead, it bundles three behaviours on top of your current keywords and ads.

Google AI Max Implementation Checklist: From Pilot to Production — overview

Search term matching uses your keywords, ads and landing pages to find queries beyond your keyword list, similar to broad match plus keywordless targeting. Text customization generates headlines and descriptions from your landing pages and existing assets. Final URL expansion lets Google send users to the page on your site it considers most relevant rather than the URL you set.

You also get controls: brand inclusions and exclusions at ad group level, location of interest settings, URL inclusions and exclusions, and reporting that shows which matches came from AI Max. Exact availability depends on account and rollout status at the time of writing.

Stage 1: Is your account ready?

AI Max relies on signals. If the signals are weak, it will find more traffic of the wrong kind. Before any pilot, confirm these basics:

Google AI Max Implementation Checklist: From Pilot to Production — in practice
  • Conversion tracking records real business outcomes, not just page views, and uses enhanced conversions where possible.
  • Primary conversion actions are set correctly; secondary actions are not counted in bidding.
  • The campaign uses a Smart Bidding strategy such as target CPA or target ROAS with enough conversion history.
  • Negative keyword lists are up to date and attached to the right campaigns.
  • Landing pages load fast and match the offer; Google reads them to write ad text.
  • Brand guidelines are clear, including words the ads must never use.

If more than one of these is missing, fix it first. AI Max will not compensate for broken measurement.

Stage 2: How should you design the pilot?

Google provides a campaign experiment option for AI Max, which splits traffic between a control and a trial version. Use it rather than turning the feature on and comparing before and after; seasonality and auction changes make before-and-after comparisons unreliable.

Pick a campaign with steady volume. A good candidate has at least several dozen conversions a month, a stable budget and no planned changes to offers. Avoid your brand campaign for the first test, because AI Max can blur brand and generic traffic.

Set the experiment for at least four weeks, longer if conversion lag is high. Decide your success metric in advance: cost per acquisition within an agreed range, conversion value, or new query coverage at acceptable efficiency.

Controls to configure on day one

  • Brand exclusions in non-brand ad groups so they do not pick up your own brand queries.
  • URL exclusions for pages that should never receive paid traffic, such as careers, blog archives or support pages.
  • Text customization review: decide whether to allow it at all for regulated messaging.
  • Location settings that reflect where customers really are, not just people interested in a location.

Stage 3: Monitoring during the test

Check the experiment weekly, not daily. Smart Bidding needs time to adjust, and early swings are normal.

Each week, review the search terms report filtered for AI Max matches. Add negatives for irrelevant themes. Look at the landing pages Google chose through final URL expansion and confirm they make sense. Read a sample of generated headlines in the asset report; remove any that misstate prices, guarantees or features.

Keep a short log of every change. If results move, you want to know whether it was the feature or your own edits.

Stage 4: From pilot to production

When the experiment ends, compare control and trial on the metric you chose. If the trial wins or performs equally with more volume, apply it to the original campaign through the experiment interface.

Roll out in waves rather than across the whole account at once:

  • Wave 1: campaigns similar to the pilot in structure and volume.
  • Wave 2: campaigns with lower volume, where you may need to combine ad groups first.
  • Wave 3: sensitive campaigns, such as regulated products or premium brand lines, only with text customization limited.
  • Ongoing: monthly review of search terms, URLs and generated assets for every AI Max campaign.

Some campaigns should stay without AI Max. Tight exact-match campaigns for high-value terms, brand defence campaigns and campaigns with legal copy restrictions are common exceptions.

What should you report to stakeholders?

Stakeholders want to know whether the feature brought new customers or just moved spend around. Report incremental conversions from AI Max matches, cost per acquisition for those matches compared with the rest of the campaign, the share of spend on new query themes, and any brand or compliance incidents. A simple table per campaign is enough.

How Alien Road applies Google AI Max

In a typical engagement our Google Ads team starts with an account audit covering conversion setup, bidding, negatives and landing pages. We score each campaign for AI Max readiness and share the list with the client before any change.

Setup includes building brand and URL exclusion lists, writing a short list of forbidden claims for text customization, and creating the experiment in the client’s account. During the test we review search terms and generated assets weekly and log every change.

Measurement is based on the experiment results plus offline conversion data where the client imports leads or sales from a CRM. Reporting is a monthly document with the per-campaign table above and a recommendation on the next rollout wave.

Where to start this week

Open Google Ads and pick one non-brand Search campaign with stable conversions. Check its conversion actions, bidding strategy and negative lists against the Stage 1 list. If everything passes, write down your success metric and the URLs you want excluded. That preparation takes about an hour and means the experiment can start the moment you are ready.
