Agentic commerce is shopping done partly or fully by AI agents that search, compare and buy on a person’s behalf, and the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is an open standard meant to let those agents talk to stores in a common way. Google introduced UCP with retail and platform partners such as Shopify. For e-commerce brands, the practical work is making product data, policies and checkout readable and usable by agents.

What is agentic commerce?

Classic online shopping assumes a person browses pages, reads, and clicks “buy”. In agentic commerce, a person asks an assistant, for example inside Gemini, ChatGPT or another AI app, to find running shoes under a budget, in a size, delivered by Friday. The agent queries stores, compares options, and either presents a shortlist or completes the purchase with the person’s approval.

Agentic Commerce and UCP for E-commerce Brands: Practical Use Cases — overview

Several standards are emerging to make this work. Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol covers how agents discover products, build carts and check out with merchants. OpenAI and Stripe published the Agentic Commerce Protocol for purchases inside ChatGPT. Payment networks are working on agent-specific payment tokens. Details are still settling at the time of writing, so treat any one standard as one channel, not the whole future.

What does UCP do in plain terms?

UCP defines a shared language between an AI agent and a merchant. Instead of each agent scraping store pages, or each store building a custom integration per assistant, the store exposes its capabilities once: product discovery, pricing, availability, cart, checkout and order updates. Agents that support the protocol can use them.

Platforms matter here. Merchants on Shopify and other large platforms may get support through the platform itself, with settings in the admin rather than code. Brands on custom stacks will need developer work against the published specification. Payments remain with the merchant’s payment provider, and the merchant stays the seller of record.
